Salustiano ‘Shorty’ Sanchez of Grand Island, NY, formerly of Niagara Falls, NY passed away on Friday September 13, 2013 in Riverwood Health Care Facility at the age of 112. Born in El Tejado de Bejar, Spain in 1901, he was the son of the late Serafin and Baldomera (Blasquez) Sanchez.
Shorty as he affectionately known by his family and friends emigrated from Spain at the age of 17 to Cuba with his friends. After working in sugar cane fields for a couple years he immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island and moved to Lynch, Kentucky to work in the coal mines. In the early 1930’s, he relocated to Niagara Falls, NY where he settled and married Pearl (Chiasera) Sanchez on April 7, 1934. Mrs. Sanchez predeceased him in 1988. Salustiano worked in construction for Scrufari Construction Company and later Union Carbide Company where he retired from after over thirty years of service. In his leisure time Shorty enjoyed working in his garden, taking long walks, playing cards, crossword puzzles and above all spending time with family. He was also a former member of the Spanish Club of Niagara Falls. Salustiano was officially certified by the Guinness World Records this past year as the world’s oldest man, and was also awarded by the Governor of Kentucky, Steven Beshear, the “Kentucky Colonel”, the highest title of honor bestowed by the Commonwealth of Kentucky given to individuals in recognition of noteworthy accomplishments.
Mr. Sanchez is survived by his two children, John (late Constance) (Fiancée Donna) Sanchez and Irene (Paul) Johnson both of Grand Island, NY, seven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also predeceased by a brother Pedro and sister Nicholasa.
