Obituary

Alex P. Destino, 92, of Niagara Falls, NY passed away Tuesday September 27, 2011 at Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence in Lewiston, NY. He was the son of the late Luigi and Maria Destino.

A lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, Alex attended local schools and graduated from the former Trott Vocational High School with honors in 1937. He served in the United States Army as a corporal during World War II and was stationed in the Pacific Theatre. On September 13, 1941 he married Anne M. (Figurilli) Destino at St. Joseph Church in Niagara Falls. Mrs. Destino predeceased him on August 12, 1997. Alex's first job was working at the former Trapasso's Gasoline Station on Pine Ave. in Niagara Falls with his brother Nunzio. Together they went on to serve their machinist apprenticeships at the Carborundum Co., and in 1957 co-founded Eastern Machine and Electric Corp. in Niagara Falls which is still family run today.

Alex was a lifelong and active member of St. Joseph's Church in Niagara Falls, where he was a member and officer in many of their societies and clubs. In 1977 he was elected as Church Trustee and served as the General Chairman for Catholic Charities for over 40 years. Alex was also active in several other community organizations which included the Niagara Falls YMCA, where he served as a member of the Board of Directors and Trustee. He was also a member and president of the Machine Shop Association of WNY. Alex was the recipient of the following awards for all of his accomplishments: The prestigious 'Corner Stone 'Award as outstanding trustee of the YMCA, the Top Man of the Week by Eddy Joseph of WHLD, the Pine Avenue - 19th St. Reunion 'Pep' DiRaimo & Anthony Bax Community Service Award, and was inducted into the Old Timers Club of Niagara Falls.

Mr. Destino is survived by his two children, Louis P. (Alice) Destino of Lewiston, NY and Joanne S. (Dr. Philip J.) Leta of Niagara Falls, NY; four grandchildren, Paul (Natalie) Destino, Ann Marie Destino, Joseph Leta, and Christina Leta; one great-grandson, Dominic Destino, three sisters and one brother, Rose (late Anthony) Figurilli, Mary (late Tom) Mastromatteo both of Niagara Falls, NY; Patsy (Betty) Destino and Susan (late Frank) Salimbene both of Lewiston, NY and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great- nephews, and cousins. He was also predeceased by four brothers and two sisters, Nunzio (Margaret of Lewiston, NY) Destino, James (Carmella of Niagara Falls, NY) Destino, Antoinette (Salvatore of Niagara Falls, NY) Rizzo, Louis (Maryann of Lewiston, NY) Destino, Joseph (Michelina 'Mickey' of San Diego, CA) Destino and Katherine (late Sebastian) Grizanti.

Visitation will be on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY RD. NIAGARA FALLS, NY where funeral services will begin on Saturday October 1st at 8:15 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 AM at Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph Parish at St. Joseph Church, 1413 Pine Ave. Niagara Falls, NY. Entombment in St. Joseph Cemetery, Niagara Falls, NY.
