Alexander 'Al' L. Markovitz, Jr., 76, of the Town of Niagara, died peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday April 29, 2009 at Niagara Hospice House in Lockport, NY. Born in North Tonawanda, NY he was the son of the late Alexander L. and Viola (Bonk) Markovitz, Sr.
Al attended local schools in North Tonawanda and graduated from North Tonawanda High School. On August 2, 1952 he married Geraldine 'Gerry'F.(Lovegrove) Markovitz at Ascension R.C. Church in North Tonawanda. During the Korean War he served in the U.S. Army from January 14, 1953 until his honorable discharge on August 11, 1954. He was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone and was awarded a National Defense Service Medal. He was employed as a draftsman at Remington Rand in North Tonawanda, NY; Moesler Safe in Buffalo, NY and was working at Howden Forge Company in Buffalo, NY at the time of his retirement in 1998. Shortly after retiring, Al and his wife moved to the Town of Niagara where they currently resided. Al was a member of the American Legion Sikora Post in North Tonawanda, NY and The Niagara Presbyterian 50+ Senior Club. His favorite pastimes included fishing, golfing and bowling.
In addition to his wife of fifty six years, Al is survived by four children Pauline (Spencer) Colquhoun of Stokesdale, NC; Lenore (David) Moceri of Niagara Falls, NY; Jacqueline (Edward) Snyder of Newark, NY and David (Maurene) Markovitz of the Town of Tonawanda, NY; eight grandchildren Scott E. and Christine A. Maersch, Michael (Janice) Moceri, Alicia, Miriah, and Louisa Snyder, Nicole and Samantha Markovitz, one great grandson Michael John Moceri, one brother Robert J. (Nancy) Markovitz of the Town of Tonawanda, NY and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by two sisters Dorothy (late Roger) Green and Janet (Anthony of North Tonawanda, NY) Matuszak.
Friends may call on Friday from 3 – 8 p.m. at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday May 2nd at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, 626 Oliver Street, North Tonawanda, NY with Rev. Louis Dolinic officiating. EVERYONE PLEASE ASSEMBLE IN CHURCH. Interment with military honors in Acacia Park and Resthaven Cemetery, North Tonawanda, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport, NY 14094. The American Legion Sikora Post will conduct services on Friday at 5:00 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
