Alfred "Fred" J. Russo, 90, passed away on Thursday July 11, 2013 in Niagara Falls, NY. Born in Rochester, NY, he was the son of the late Nicola and Vincenzina (Camuglia) Russo.
Alfred graduated from East High School in Rochester, NY in 1941. During World War II he served in the United States Army from January 15, 1943 until his honorable discharge June 5, 1945, serving at Camp Stewart, GA and other military stations. On July 5, 1947 he married Dolores (Gonzalez) Russo. Mr. Russo managed portrait studios in Rome, NY and New Castle, PA, and also worked in the research department as a photographer and microscopist at Great Lakes Carbon for many years.
Mr. Russo, along with his wife, owned and operated House of Portraits photography studio in Niagara Falls, NY until retiring in 1987. Their portrait studio was family oriented, and they treasured the many friendships gained over four decades with the people they served. In 2002 he, and his wife, received the Pine Avenue Business Citizens award recognizing their contributions and service to the community including the many photographs donated to the Niagara Falls Library and Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. Mr. Russo won numerous awards for his photographs and was a judge at various photographic seminars and conventions. He attained the honor of "Master of Photography" and "Craftsman" and his work was featured in the Professional Photographers of America collection and also featured on the covers of the 75th anniversary and 100th anniversary books for St. Joseph Parish in Niagara Falls, NY. He enjoyed golf, and despite a lack of professional instruction and playing time, was able to score a 78 at age 82. In addition to the competition of golf, he especially enjoyed the exercise and camaraderie of friends, and particularly their weekly breakfast. Mr. Russo was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion Portage Post, Italian Veterans Post #42, Italian Sons and Daughters (ISDA) Cataract Lodge #240 and the New York State Professional Photographers Association.
In addition to his wife of sixty-six years, Fred is survived by his son, Victor (Mary) Russo of Niagara Falls, NY and a daughter, Dolores Russo Austin (Alan Austin) of Dallas, TX; a sister, Millie (late Leonard) Pudetti of Rochester, NY; cousins, Loretta Abbo and Phyllis Marra, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Sam (Grace of Webster, NY) Russo.
Visitation will be Monday July 15th from 10 AM until 12 Noon at M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY RD. NIAGARA FALLS, NY where funeral services will be held at 12 NOON with Rev. Stewart Lindsay O.S.F.S., officiating. Interment with military honors in St. Joseph Cemetery, Niagara Falls, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans, VA Regional Office Room 815-C, 111 West Huron, Buffalo, NY 14202.
