Angelo V. Onevelo, 77, of North Tonawanda, NY, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 20, 2024 at Welland Hospital surrounded by his family. Born in Niagara Falls, Ontario, he was the son of the late Angelo P. and Ida (Briand) Onevelo.
Angelo was raised in Niagara Falls, NY and graduated from Bishop Duffy High School. He obtained his Bachelor's Degree from Tarkio College in Missouri and earned his Master's Degree from the University of Iowa. Prior to completing his Master's Degree, he was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He proudly served with the 2nd Platoon, 1/20 Infantry, 11th Brigade, 23rd Infantry Division. In 1972, he was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant E5.
Angelo began working in Rochester, NY at Strong Memorial Hospital in Environmental Health and Preventative Medicine before returning to Niagara Falls in 1980. He joined the family business and became the President of Ange's Scrap Iron and Metal, Inc. (formerly Century Salvage) in Niagara Falls for over 25 years until his retirement in 2007.
Angelo was extremely dedicated to the community and was a longtime member of the Town of Niagara Lions Club, currently serving as the Chairman of the Veterans Day, Memorial Day, and Citizenship Awards ceremonies. In addition, he was active with the Town of Wheatfield Lions Club and instrumental in their medical equipment loan program, and was a current member of the Cristoforo Colombo Society. In recognition of his outstanding devotion to the community throughout the years, Angelo was presented with numerous community and civic awards.
Angelo was an avid golfer and member of the Niagara Frontier Country Club for over 30 years. He was also a passionate fan of the New York Yankees, Buffalo Bills, and loved attending his two grandsons' baseball games. Following his retirement, he took up playing the saxophone, a hobby he treasured. He also loved vacationing to his cottage in Sherkston Shores, Ontario and The Villages in Florida. Above all, Angelo cherished the time spent with his beloved family and friends. He will be greatly missed by a community who loved him greatly.
Angelo is survived by his wife of 38 years, Mary (Marino) Onevelo; his three children, Phillip A. (Kimberly) Onevelo, Michael J. (Jessica) Onevelo and Angelo J. (Dr. Phillip Spinosa) Onevelo; his grandchildren, Derek Onevelo, Phillip Onevelo, Karina Onevelo and Korra Onevelo; his sister, Dr. Sharon O. (late Andrew) Watkinson; late Phillip Onevelo who died at childbirth; his cherished cousins, Rosanne (Stephen) Zafuto, and their children, Stephen (Maria) Zafuto, Maria (Jim) Mauro, Michele DiGregorio, Tom (Lisa) Zafuto and Michael (Valerie) Zafuto; his two sisters-in-law, Antoinette (Richard) McCormick and Rosalie (Garry) Soehner; brother-in-law Joseph Marino; and several loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be on Thursday, July 25 from 2 – 8 PM at M.J. Colucci & Son Niagara Funeral Chapel, 2730 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY. Angelo's Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, July 26 at 11:00 AM in the Alumni Chapel of Niagara University, 5795 Lewiston Road, Niagara University, NY. Please assemble at church. Entombment will be held privately in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Niagara Falls, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to the Town of Niagara Lions Club or the Town of Wheatfield Lions Club. Visit mjcoluccifuneralchapel.com for online condolences.
