Obituary

Anthony C. Alfonse, 94, of Niagara Falls, NY passed away Tuesday June 22, 2010 at Niagara Hospice House in Lockport, NY. Born in Manhattan, NY he was the son of the late Casimir and Mary (Szymons) Alfonse.

Following the loss of both parents he was raised at St. John's Home in Brooklyn, NY, moved to the Niagara Falls area at the age of eighteen and began working at Union Carbide. During World War II he served in the United States Army with the 82nd Airborne Division, 507th Parachute Infantry from October 3, 1942 until his honorable discharge on September 28, 1945. He received many honors for his service, and was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries he received during the D-Day Invasion at Normandy on June 6, 1944.

On October 15, 1945 he married Margaret (Pippard) Alfonse at Sacred Heart Church in Niagara Falls, NY. Mrs. Alfonse predeceased him on March 6, 1986. Anthony was employed at Stauffer Chemical Company in Lewiston, NY until his retirement in 1968 and later worked as a security guard at Niagara Stone in Town of Niagara, NY. Anthony was an avid golfer, and enjoyed following current events as a frequent listener of talk radio programs. He enjoyed telling jokes and was known for his wonderful sense of humor. Most importantly, Anthony enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his two daughters Mary Linda Manz of Niagara Falls, NY and Cynthia (Jeff) Walker of Hereford, AZ; grandchildren James (Tina) Manz, Amy (Keith) Stahlman, and the late Marcy Lynn Walker; five great-grandchildren Leonard, Jessica, Joshua, Deven, and Sara; two brothers William Alfonse, James Alfonse, and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother-in-law of Patricia Jordan, William (Millie) Pippard, Richard (Barbara) Pippard, Gordon Pippard, and the late Vincent (late Betty) Pippard, Robert (late Olga) Pippard, Jack (Marie of Florida) Pippard, and George Pippard.

Visitation will be on Monday 6 – 9 p.m. at M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 Military Rd. Niagara Falls, NY where services with military honors will be held on Tuesday June 29th at 11:00 a.m. Interment in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lewiston, NY at the convenience of the family. If desired, memorials may be made to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Dr. Lockport, NY 14094. The Alfonse family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to Niagara Hospice and Dr. Alfred Fast for the care and support given to Anthony.
