Obituary

Anthony "Tony" Quaranto, 91, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 21, 2019, at Buffalo General Hospital. Born in Niagara Falls, he was the son of the late Raffelle J. and Concetta (Farace) Quaranta; and beloved husband of Myrabelle (Dingwall) Quaranto, who he married on November 21, 1953 in the former Sacred Heart Church.

Tony was a graduate of Trott Vocational High School where he earned letters in basketball, football, baseball and track. Following his graduation, he attended St. Mary's High School for one year to continue his football career. He later went on to play for the North End Merchants, Prospect House, and Hitching Post in the Western New York Semi-Professional Football League. He played baseball in the Double I League for Pop Davidson and won two championships, and also played for the Simon Oil and once again won a championship with the club. He was selected to the league's All-Star team for three years. He continued to play baseball in the Niagara and Erie County League and the Industrial Baseball League.

Tony was an avid bowler and competed in many local leagues. He took great pride in winning the double's tournament in 1996 at Frontier Lanes with his son, Anthony, Jr., as well as bowling a perfect 300 game in his career. He was a longtime member of the New York State Men's Bowling Association and was elected their director in 1964. He also served as their secretary, vice-president and president throughout his tenure. He was also a longtime member and officer of the Niagara Falls Bowling Association and was instrumental in bringing The American Bowling Congress Tournament to Niagara Falls in 1983 and 1987.

Mr. Quaranto retired from Carborundum Company after 30 years of employment.  While at Carborundum, he was the Union Steward for the AFL-CIO, which led to his leadership and governing. He served as Niagara County Legislator from 1975 to 1985, and was their Majority Leader and Chairman. He also served as a Councilman for the City of Niagara Falls for 12 years, and was elected as Chairman.

Tony was involved in countless organizations and clubs including the United Way, Knights of Columbus, Sertoma Club, Cristoforo Columbo Society, St. Raphael's Church, Catholic Charities, served on the Red Cross Board of Directors, and volunteered at Niagara Falls Memorial Hospital for many years. He was an exceptional coach and referee official for various sports and a member of the New York State Football Basketball and Baseball Officials. He also co-founded the Whirlpool Little League in 1970.

Tony was the recipient of many awards which included the Niagara Award, Top Hat of the Week Award, Sportsman By-Gone Years and the New York State Seniors Bowling Championship. He was also inducted into the Niagara Falls Sports Hall of Fame, where he currently served as the organization's President for many years.

Mr. Quaranto was an avid Buffalo Bills fan, enjoyed golfing, and made a hole-in-one while golfing in Canada. He also enjoyed working at the Hyde Park Golf Course in his later years, and spending time with family and friends. His personality and devotion to the community will be greatly missed.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Michele (late Patrick) Payne, Anthony (Karen) Quaranto, Jr., James (Teresa) Quaranto and Annette Louise Quaranto; four grandchildren, Sean Payne, Nicholas Quaranto, Dr. Brian Quaranto MD, and Andrew Quaranto; two great-grandchildren, Cameron and Jack Quaranto; one sister-in-law, Carol (late John, Jr.) Dingwall; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
