Obituary

Barbara Aloian, 86, of Niagara Falls, NY passed away Saturday October 6, 2012 at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. Born in Detroit, MI she was the daughter of the late Seroon H. and Azniv (Hosepian) Aloian.

Barbara attended school in Detroit, MI and graduated from Highland Park High School. On June 3, 1950 she married Sarkis Aloian in St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Niagara Falls, NY and together they operated his family's grocery store, Sark Aloian and Sons formerly located on Tenth and East Falls Street in Niagara Falls. Mr. Aloian passed away May 27, 2010. Barbara also held various jobs locally and later in life she worked at her son's volleyball bar "The Porter House" in Youngstown, NY. Barbara's Armenian culture and traditions were a very important part of her life. She was a longtime member of St. Hagop Armenian Church and past member of the Armenian Relief Society (ARS), which awarded her with a 25 year pin in recognition of her years of service. In her leisure time, she enjoyed baking Armenian pastries, playing card games, backgammon and going to the Casino. But most important to Barbara was her family who she centered her life around, especially her grandchildren.

Mrs. Aloian is survived by four children, Lawrence (Nora) Aloian of Grand Island, NY, Vanik (Terry) Aloian of Wilson, NY, Mary (Peter) Ohanessian of Lewiston, NY and Christina (James) Tomasine of Newfane, NY; nine grandchildren and two step grandchildren, Jennifer (John) Gilmore, Stephanie (Erik) Brennan, Michael Aloian, Vanik-Jon (Rose) Aloian, Jason (Kim) Wilson, Jeremy (Renee) Wilson, Sara Ohanessian, Lisa Ohanessian, Lori (Kyle) Hurtgam, Santo (Jessica) Tomasine and Samantha Sommers; her great-grandchildren, Ryan Gilmore, Caleb Gilmore, Nathan Brennan, Gavan Aloian, Mason Sarkis Aloian, Foster Wilson, Harrison Wilson, Julia Tomasine, Ani Sommers and Emma Barbara Sommers as well as several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters Mary (late William) Powell, Alice (late Vaskin) Hatchigian and Virginia (late Samuel) Andonian.


Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2 – 4 and 6 – 9 p.m. at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY where a Prayer Vigil will take place at 8 p.m. Funeral services will begin on Friday October 12th at 9:45 a.m. at the funeral chapel and at 10:30 a.m. in St. Hagop Armenian Apostolic Church, 322 9th Street, Niagara Falls, NY with Archpriest Father Vazken Bekiarian officiating, assisted by Deacon Albert Amato. Interment will be held in Oakwood Cemetery, Niagara Falls, NY. Memorial donations may be made to St. Hagop Armenian Apostolic Church, 322 9th Street, Niagara Falls, NY 14303.
