Betty J. Spinley, formerly of Niagara Falls, NY passed away on December 19, 2011. She was the daughter of the late John Shankland and Violet (Hiller) Shankland Trask.

A 1944 graduate of Niagara Falls High School, Betty gave up a full nursing scholarship to Niagara University in order to help support her mother and younger siblings upon her father's death. On June 6, 1947, Betty married her eighth grade sweetheart, Ernest J. Spinley; they were together until her husband's death on October 27, 2000.

Both Betty and Ernie had a passion for politics and, at different times, served as vice-chairman and chairman, respectively, for the City of Niagara Falls Republican Party. In the mid-1960's, Betty became the Administrative Assistant to the Honorable Earl W. Brydges during his tenure as Majority Leader of the New York State Senate and went on to run his regional office on Pine Avenue in Niagara Falls. Upon the Senator's retirement, she remained in the same capacity running the Senate's offices in Buffalo, NY for several of Senator Brydge's successors. Betty retired in 1993, receiving a special commendation from the New York State Senate.

Betty is survived by her beloved daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Michael Harmon of Grand Island, NY; her brother, Robert (Caroline) Shankland, and sister Ruth.
