Cecelia I. (Irzyk) Formica, 87, of 21st Street Niagara Falls, NY died on Monday April 18, 2011 at Niagara Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on Cedar Avenue in Niagara Falls, NY.
She was born April 17, 1924 in Gary, Indiana, the daughter of Michael and Mary (Nawrocki) Irzyk. She graduated from Emerson High School in Gary, Indiana in 1942 and served in the Women's Air Corps from 1943 to 1945 during World War II, during which time she met and married her husband, Joseph Carmen Formica. Mr. and Mrs. Formica were married for 54 years until his death in 1999.
She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed many years of friendships with her numerous customers who sought her expertise in her dressmaking abilities and especially alterations.
Celia ("Sis") was also a member of Divine Mercy Parish and also served as a Eucharist Minister at the former Our Lady of the Rosary Church prior to its closing.
Mrs. Formica is survived by a son Gary Joseph (Darlene) Formica of Niagara Falls, NY; a daughter Carmen Kennedy of Florida; grandson Jack (Jennifer) Kennedy and granddaughter Rachelle (David) Grossman. She was greatly loved by five great grandchildren Alexandra, Kaylee and DJ (David, Jr.) Grossman, and Sierra and baby Brianna Kennedy all of Florida. She was predeceased by an infant brother Andrew Martin Irzyk in 1945, Michael Irzyk, Jr. in 1990 and another granddaughter Kristin Marie Kennedy in 2004.
Also surviving are 3 sisters, Anne (late Mitchell) Krask of Chicago, Illinois; Dolores (Henry) Kruszynski of Green Bay, Wisconsin; Barbara (John) Skora of Aurora, Missouri. Also two sisters-in-law, MaryJane Ross of Niagara Falls and Dorothy Irzyk of Lafayette, Indiana. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friend and helper Kathy Kachurek of Niagara Falls.
There will be no prior visitation. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday April 25th at 10 a.m. in Divine Mercy Church, 2437 Niagara Street, Niagara Falls, NY with Rev. Jacek Mazur officiating. Entombment at the convenience of the family will be in Riverdale Cemetery, Lewiston, NY. In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Cecelia may be made to Divine Mercy Parish, 2437 Niagara Street, Niagara Falls, NY 14303.
