Daniel R. Lewis, 58, of the Town of Niagara, NY died on Wednesday July 1, 2009 at Eastern Niagara Hospital in Lockport, NY. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada he was the son of the late Charles F. and Kathleen M. (Ashley) Lewis.
Daniel came to Niagara Falls, NY as a child with his family. He attended local schools and graduated from the former LaSalle Senior High School. Daniel served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Ticonderoga from June 29, 1970 until his honorable discharge on November 28, 1973 and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Vietnam Service Medal. On April 12, 1975 he married Myriam D. (Witt) Lewis in Niagara Falls, NY. Dan was employed as a firefighter and certified HAZMAT Instructor at the Niagara Falls Air Force Base for thirty years until his retirement in 2001.
Daniel was a passionate outdoorsman, and avid hunter and fisherman. He was a long time member of the LaSalle Sportsman Club where he served as former president and treasurer. He was also former president, and currently vice-president of Niagara Falls Bow Hunters Inc. Daniel was also active in various other organizations including President of the Buff Social Club, a member of the Masonic lodge, Canisteo American Legion #846, and was an Exempt Member of Niagara #1 Volunteer Fire Department in the Town of Niagara. In his leisure; Dan also enjoyed dirt track car racing, but his greatest pleasure came from spending time with his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife of thirty four years, Daniel is survived by three sons, Brian Daniel (Kelly) Lewis, Christopher Scott (Melanie) Lewis both of Las Vegas, NV and Nicholas Stephen (fiancé Jean Marsh) Lewis of Niagara Falls, NY; two grandchildren, Daniel William Lewis and Joshua David Lewis, one brother Charles J. Lewis of Ransomville, NY and several nieces and nephews. He was the son-in-law of Helga (late Herbert) Witt of Wheatfield, NY and brother-in-law of, Norbert (Linda) Witt, Peter (Shelly) Witt and Thomas Witt all of North Tonawanda, NY. He was also predeceased by two sisters' Patricia (late Frank) Ciccone and Coleen Lewis.
Friends may call on Sunday from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 p.m. at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY where services will be held on Monday July 6th at 11 a.m. with Robert Fink officiating. Interment with Military Honors will be held in Riverdale Cemetery, Lewiston, NY.
