Obituary

Domenick J. Capannola, 77, of Niagara Falls, NY died on Monday April 6, 2009 in Raleigh, NC. Born in Niagara Falls, NY he was the son of the late Amadeo and Louise (Savini) Capannola.

Domenick graduated from the former Trott Vocational High School in Niagara Falls, NY and later attended the University of Vermont. During the Korean War he served as a Corporal in the U.S. Army from October 17, 1952 until his honorable discharge on October 16, 1954. On February 9, 1963 he married Mary Ann P. (D'Anna) Capannola in Niagara Falls, NY. Mrs. Capannola predeceased him on August 17, 1996. For a brief time, Domenick worked as an insurance agent for Metropolitan Life. He later went on to become a pipe fitter, and worked twenty five years with the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 129, presently Local 22 until his retirement in 1990.

Mr. Capannola was an exceptional athlete and a member of the football, baseball and basketball teams of both Trott Vocational High School and the University of Vermont. In 1952, Domenick was a top draft pick of the Cleveland Indians Professional Baseball Team, and continued to be active in sports throughout his life with his involvement in local athletic leagues. In his leisure time, he enjoyed winemaking and gardening, but above all, Domenick was devoted to his family, especially his children and grandchildren.

Mr. Capannola is survived by his two sons Christopher (Sabrina) Capannola of Falls Church, VA and Marc (Melissa) Capannola of Raleigh, NC; three grandchildren Joseph Capannola, Anna Capannola and Domenick Capannola, one brother Mario (Sue) Capannola of North Tonawanda, NY; one sister Josephine (late John) Signorelli of Niagara Falls, NY and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also predeceased by one brother Richard Capannola and one sister Julia Capannola.

Friends may call on Friday from 5-9 p.m. at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY where services will begin on Saturday April 11th at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Rite of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Parish at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 27th Street and Independence Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY with Rev. Duane Klizek officiating. Interment will be held in St. Joseph Cemetery, Niagara Falls, NY. Mr. Capannola's family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Abbotswood, especially Carol Beasley, CNA for their compassion and care.
