Dominick G. Mitro, 91 of Niagara Falls, NY, went to rest with Jesus on Friday October 23, 2009 in Mt. St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston, NY. The youngest of six children, Dominick was born in the family homestead on Linwood Avenue in Niagara Falls, NY on January 5, 1918, to the late Liberato and Loretta Mitro.
Dominick was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls and always lived in the middle city area. He was a graduate of Niagara Falls High School and lifelong member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church. He had a servant's heart, as he served people one way or another all of his life. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II as a First Lieutenant for five years in the Infantry Division. In 1944 he was injured by shrapnel in New Guinea, and was honorably discharged, and awarded a purple heart.
Once back home, Dominick married the love of his life, Rose (LaMortacella) Mitro, and with a work associate, Charles Clarke started Clarke & Mitro Heating and Air Conditioning Co., to serve the people of Niagara Falls and surrounding areas for over 45 years. After retiring, the business was passed on to his sons, Dom and Tom as, Mitro Heating & Air Conditioning Co. Even as a retired 'Man of Leisure', Dominick still served as a consultant with the business.
The joy of his life was his beautiful wife, Rose and his family. Together they enjoyed many parties and social activities at the Century Club, where Dominick was a founding member and served as president for two years. He was also a member of the Elk's Lodge and the Judges and Police Association, where he served on the Board of Directors. Dom and Rose enjoyed many summer weekends with family and friends at their cottage, where the children spent their summers with his parents. He loved to dance, play cards and was an avid New York Yankee and Buffalo Bills fan. Dominick was a faithful husband, wonderful father, gracious father-in-law, and as a friend once remarked, 'Always had a great smile on his face.' His sons were very close and attentive to their father.
