Dr. Donald L. Campbell, Ph.D., professor emeritus of physiology and biophysics at the University of Buffalo, departed this life at the age of 62 on February 15, 2018, under the care of Hospice, after enduring young-onset Frontal-Temporal Degeneration. Don was the beloved husband of Karen (Salhany) Campbell; loving brother of Lessie of Imperial Beach, CA, Thomas (Ann) of Solana Beach, CA and Bobbie Lee (Floyd) Bush of Hillsboro, Ohio; dear uncle of Robert, Michael, and Christopher (Julie) and Vera (Jeffrey). He was predeceased by one nephew Robert Lee Bush in 2012. He was also the cherished brother-in-law of the Salhany family and is also survived by many colleagues, students, friends, and Pippin. His family would like to thank all his devoted caregivers for their love and support.
Don was born January 27, 1956, in Coronado, CA, the son of the late Bobby and Vera (Reebel) Campbell. He graduated from Mar Vista High School in Imperial Beach, CA, and received a B.S. in Zoology from San Diego State University. He earned his doctorate from University of Texas Medical Branch (Galveston,) and post-doctoral degrees from University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and University of Oxford, England. He became a research associate at Duke University before coming to University at Buffalo in 1998.
He was a member of the Biophysical Society, and was known for his research expertise in cardiac cellular electrophysiology. He was the recipient of several National Institute of Health Grants and published over 70 papers. He lectured from his own textbook, which he also illustrated. He loved reading, music, the Buffalo Bills, and enjoyed skiing. He, along with his sense of humor and creative imagination, will be deeply missed.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 18 th from 4 – 7 P.M. with a Trisagion service to be held at 6 P.M. at St. George Orthodox Church, 1073 Saunders Settlement Rd, Niagara Falls, NY, 14305 and on Monday from 9 AM to 10 A.M followed by Funeral services at 10 A.M. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Donations in Don's memory may be made to Hospice Buffalo and the WNY Alzheimer's Association. ARRANGEMENTS BY M.J.
