Edward "Eddie" P. Michaels, Sr., 91, formerly of the Town of Niagara died on Wednesday August 28, 2013 at Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care in Lewiston, NY. Born in Rochester, NY he was the son of the late Milad and Rose (Rohanna) Zacharia.
Eddie came to the Niagara Falls area as a child with his family, attended local schools and graduated from the Old St. Mary's High School. In his younger years he excelled at basketball, often scoring double digits, as a member and captain of St. Mary's High School basketball team, even though he was one of the smallest players in his school district's league. He once scored 32 points in a single game, breaking all existing records at that time.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Army as a Technician Fifth Grade working in intelligence communications and was involved with the campaigns and battles in the European Theatre, the Bulge, Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland. He served from November 10, 1942 until his honorable discharge on December 19, 1945 and was the recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and an American Service Medal.
Mr. Michaels was a restaurant and souvenir shop proprietor in Niagara Falls, and a member of the Moose Lodge and Elks Club both in Niagara Falls, NY. He was also an avid bowler and participated in numerous leagues throughout the Niagara Falls area. Mr. Michaels enjoyed spending time with his family and his granddaughters were the shining light of his life.
He is survived by his wife Clare L. (Dent) Michaels, three sons David C. (Kathy) Michaels of Olcott, NY; Edward P. Michaels, Jr. of Niagara Falls, NY and William G. (Lisa) Michaels of Lewiston, NY; two granddaughters Olivia and Jessika Michaels and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was the brother of the late William "Billy" (Elizabeth of Niagara Falls, NY) Michaels, the late Bernard (late Mary) Zachary, the late Harry (late Kona) Zachary, Youmna (Faris) Karam and Naibi (Cecilia) Zacharia both of Amchit, Lebanon.
Visitation will be on Friday from 5 – 8 p.m. at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday August 31st at 12 Noon at St. Peter's Church, 620 Center Street, Lewiston, NY with Msgr. David G. LiPuma officiating. EVERYONE PLEASE ASSEMBLE AT CHURCH. Entombment with military honors in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston, NY.
