Obituary

Eleanor Rose Castiglione, who proudly celebrated her 99th birthday on June 19, 2026, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2026, at Niagara Hospice House. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, she was the daughter of the late John and Rose (Ramolo) Gabriel.

A graduate of Niagara Falls High School, Eleanor carried her love for family, faith, and community throughout her long life. She married her beloved husband, Peter Castiglione, and together they shared more than 68 memorable years.

After dedicating herself to raising her family, Eleanor began a new career as an administrative assistant at Lewiston-Porter High School, where several of her children were enrolled. She later served many years as assistant to the Principal. During her years at Lew-Port, she formed lifelong friendships with staff, teachers, and students, often running into them around the Lewiston community following her retirement, which brought her great joy.

A devout Catholic and faithful member of St. Peter’s Church, Eleanor helped run the parish bingo program for many years. She also spent countless summers ushering at Artpark, where she and Peter delighted in dancing together on Big Band Mondays. Her commitment to service continued well into her later years as she volunteered alongside her husband at the North Tonawanda Food Pantry. When her children finally insisted she stop driving the half-hour winter commute, they presented her with a sweatshirt that read “Retired Again,” a gesture that made her laugh and reflected her spirited nature.

Eleanor was the mainstay of her large and extended family. She sewed clothes, made prom dresses, cut hair, baked and decorated birthday cakes, and hosted Sunday dinner every week until three weeks ago, always with a fresh pot of sauce, macaroni, and dessert. The menu never changed and her family never tired of it. Her home was a place of constancy, comfort, and tradition, shaped by her hands and her heart.

The last living member of her generation, Eleanor was predeceased by her sisters, Mary (late Ben) Norris and Josephine (late Samuel Ventry) (late Luigi Masceri) Masceri; her brothers, Fred (late Josephine) Gabriele and John (late Florence) Gabriele; several nieces and nephews and one great grandchild.

Eleanor is survived by her children: Jane Castiglione Killewald, Jerry (Maureen) Castiglione, Donna Castiglione, Marie (Lance) Lillian, and Paul (Chris) Castiglione; ten grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss her dearly. She is also survived by her oldest and dearest friend, Lucy Pitrone, with whom she spoke often, as well as her beloved caretaker and newest friend, Lisa Hall.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 18, from 10–11 AM at St. Peter’s Church, 620 Center Street, Lewiston, NY 14092, where Eleanor’s Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston, NY.
