1914-2015

Fortunata 'Fannie' (Conti) Scalzo, age 101 of the Town of Niagara, NY, passed away on Monday November 16, 2015 at Mt. St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston, NY. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, she was the daughter of the late Domenico and Maria (Filardo) Conti.

Fannie, as she was affectionately known, moved to Italy at age 4 with her family where she was raised until moving back to Niagara Falls at the age of 14. On November 28, 1935, she married Albert Scalzo at St. Mary of the Cataract Church in Niagara Falls. Mr. Scalzo predeceased her on November 9, 1985. Fannie was the proud matriarch of her family. In 2014, on the occasion of her 100th birthday, she was recognized as a Centenarian by the Town of Niagara, NY and also received an Apostolic Blessing from Pope Francis. Fannie was a longtime devoted parishioner of St. Joseph's Church in Niagara Falls and member of their Societa Femminile Maria SS del Carmine.

Mrs. Scalzo is survived by her four children, Julia Jeanette (late Dominic) Fera, Frank (late Barbara) Scalzo both of the Town of Niagara, NY, Mary Ann (Bruno) Mercurio of Wheatfield, NY and Patricia (Clifford 'Kenny') Calvello of the Town of Niagara, NY, nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, her loving cousin Jennie Conti, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also predeceased by one great-grandson, Adam Mulholland, one sister Frances Filardo and one brother Carman Conti.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2-7 p.m. at M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL 2730 MILITARY ROAD NIAGARA FALLS, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday November 20th at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Parish at St. Joseph's Church 1413 Pine Ave. Niagara Falls, NY with Rev. Duane Klizek officiating. EVERYONE PLEASE ASSEMBLE AT CHURCH. If desired, memorial offerings may be made to a charity of one's choice. Interment will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery Niagara Falls, NY.
