Obituary

Fr. Steven M. Grancini, CRSP, Barnabite Fathers, Pastor of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, San Diego, CA, died on Sunday January 2, 2011 at the age of 78 years, after a lengthy illness. Born in Milan, Italy on June 13, 1932, he entered the Minor Seminary of the Barnabite Fathers at the age of 12 years. He made his First Profession of Vows in Monza, Italy on September 29, 1950 and his Solemn Profession of Vows in Rome, Italy on October 11, 1955. He completed his studies at Our Lady of the Angels Seminary, Niagara University, and was ordained to priesthood in St. Joseph Cathedral on December 8, 1957 by Most Rev. Joseph A. Burke, DD, Bishop of Buffalo.

Fr. Grancini taught at Bishop Gibbons High School in North Tonawanda, NY and served as Vice-Principal. He was appointed Provincial Superior of the North American Province in 1963. He served as Chaplain of the Carmelite Nuns and also Chaplain at Sister's Hospital both in Buffalo, NY. He was elected as the 72nd Superior General of the Barnabite Order in 1976 at the General Chapter in Naples, Italy, and resided in Rome for six years. Returning to the United States in 1982, he was appointed Director of Our Lady of Fatima Shrine, Youngstown NY. In 1985 he was assigned to Our Lady of the Rosary Parish in San Diego, CA where he served with zeal and dedication for twenty-five years.

Fr. Grancini was predeceased by his brother, Fr. Vittorio M. Grancini, CRSP, Provincial Superior of the Barnabite Missions in Brazil. He is also survived by his confreres in the Barnabite Order.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday January 6th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Cathedral, 1525 Third Ave. San Diego, CA with Most Rev. Robert H. Brom, DD, Bishop of San Diego, and Most Rev. Giovanni Villa, CRSP, Superior General of the Barnabite Fathers presiding.

A Rite of Commendation and Farwell will take place on Saturday January 8, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. in the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima 1023 Swan Road Youngstown , NY with interment following in the Barnabite Fathers Cemetery.
