Frank P. Scaletta, 81, of Niagara Falls, NY passed away on December 6, 2016 at his residence under the care of Niagara Hospice. Born in Niagara Falls, NY he was the son of the late Samuel J. and Rose (Sardella) Scaletta.
Frank was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls. He graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1953 and from University of Montana in 1958. Frank also attended the University of Buffalo and S.U.N.Y at Brockport. He was employed by the Niagara Falls Board of Education as an elementary, junior and senior high physical education teacher, until his retirement after thirty-eight years of service. Frank was a gifted and skilled athlete who won numerous awards in football and baseball throughout his high school career. He went on to play football and baseball at Montana State University where he also began bowling as a varsity sport. He later coached high school baseball and football for many years at Trott Vocational High School, Niagara Falls High School and LaSalle Senior High School and became affectionately known to everyone as "Coach". Frank continued to bowl in various leagues throughout his life and was a member of several championship teams. In 2002 he was inducted into the Niagara Falls Sports Hall of Fame in recognition of all his athletic achievements.
Frank was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 247 and the Niagara Falls Booster Club. He also had a passion for golf and loved golfing with his friends on Tuesdays. He was especially proud of being instrumental in saving the Niagara Falls Golf Course from being sold to a private company. Frank also owned several properties and businesses in Niagara Falls, and in his leisure time, enjoyed going to OTB. Most of all, Frank loved spending time with his family, telling them stories and guiding his grandchildren, known to them as "Papa" through life.
Frank is survived by his beloved wife of fifty-nine years, Marie (Barone) Scaletta, his daughter, Susan Scaletta Gaffney; four grandchildren, Janelle (Billy) Rivera, Daniel Gaffney, Christine (fiancé Justin Parish) Gaffney and Kathleen Gaffney; great-grandchildren Mariana, Julianna and Billy Rivera; two brothers, Lawrence (Jeannie) Scaletta and Samuel (Shannon) Scaletta, his former student and dear friend Scott Murdock, one aunt as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. He was also predeceased by one brother Paul Scaletta.
There will be no prior visitation. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday December 10th at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Parish at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 27th Street and Independence Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY. Memorial donations may be made to Niagara Hospice or to Holy Family Parish. Arrangements by M.J.
