George E. McKedy, 87, of Niagara Falls, NY passed away on Tuesday March 8, 2011 at his residence. Born in Morrisdale, PA he was the son of the late John and Ann (Zuflatt) McKedy.
George attended Morris Township schools in Pennsylvania and graduated from Morris Township High School with honors in 1941. He was accepted to the advanced engineering science program at Penn State University which was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense. As the War began, Mr. McKedy was assigned to the United States Navy as an engineering specialist. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy Air Force as a cadet and was stationed in Corpus Christi, TX when the War ended. George was very grateful to Harry Truman for his brave actions. He continued his education and graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. On November 27, 1947 he married Veronica (Slipko) McKedy in Milwaukee, WI and in 1951, they moved to Niagara Falls, NY where he lived until the present time. Mrs. McKedy predeceased him on July 30, 2000. He was employed at DuPont Chemical Co. in Niagara Falls where he co-developed a tension control device. He then worked as a plant engineer for other area companies including Airco Alloys where he was a project manager for the development and installation of a state of the art dust collector. During this time Mr. McKedy joined the U.S. Navy Reserves in Youngstown, NY where he served as an executive officer and earned the rank of Lt. Commander. George retired from Harrison Radiator as a plant environmental engineer.
Mr. McKedy and his wife were very active members at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Niagara Falls where he also served on the church council and as a lector. George was also a former member of the Masons. Mr. and Mrs. McKedy took great pride in their grandchildren and were also very active in attending their sports activities.
Mr. McKedy is survived by three children, Diane L. Egan of Marlborough, MA; George E. (Barbara) McKedy of Williamsville, NY and Cheryl (Peter J.) Genovese of Lewiston, NY; four grandchildren, Joseph (fiancé Melissa Morinello) Genovese, Kristen (fiancé Keith Bajor) Genovese, Lindsay Egan and John Egan, one brother Andrew (Dorothy) McKedy of State College, PA; two sisters Ann (Jim) Flynn of Texas and Emily (Louis) Forgy of Illinois, his sister-in-law Ann (late Ted) Slipko of Niagara Falls, NY and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also predeceased by two brothers, John (Lottie of Niagara Falls, NY) McKedy and Edward (late Esther) McKedy. Mr. McKedy's family would like to extend a special thank you to his caregivers, Billie Jo and Mickey for the compassion and care shown to him.
Friends may call on Friday from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 pm at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY, where funeral services will begin on Saturday March 12th at 9:45 a.m. followed at 10:30 a.m. in St. Peter's Episcopal Church 140 Rainbow Blvd. Niagara Falls, NY with Deacon Patrick Bradley officiating. Interment will follow in Riverdale Cemetery, Lewiston, NY with Military Honors.
