Gertrude "Trudy" Wlosek, of Niagara Falls, NY died at the age of 86 after a brief hospitalization Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at Buffalo General Hospital. Trudy was born in Krummau, Czechoslovakia. Her family was forced to leave their homeland when Trudy was 14, due to the invasion by German forces during WWII. They were moved to a refugee camp in Erding, Germany. Trudy worked in the U.S. P.X. which was where she ultimately met her husband, Joseph Wlosek. They were happily married for 59 years.
Trudy and Joe were sponsored to come to the United States by her beloved cousin, Elsie Smith, in 1951. They were very proud to become naturalized U.S. citizens and studied English in night school. Trudy worked as a short order cook at Rogers Restaurant for a short time before becoming a packer at Nabisco for 27 years. Trudy was remembered for her German Apple Kuchen at the restaurant. She had very fond memories of all "the girls" who helped her feel part of the Nabisco family.
She was happiest while enjoying the company of her family, especially when that included watching WWF wrestling. She also spent many hours at the Summit Park Mall Food Court with her post-retirement group of friends.
Trudy is survived by her husband, Joseph; daughter, Elsie (Robert) Martino of Grand Island; grandsons, Nicholas (Heather), and Joseph, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also predeceased by five brothers, Friedrich "Fritz", Alfred, Franz, Walter, Johann "Hans" and half brother, Otto (wife Waltraud); and two sisters, Anna and another who passed before Trudy was born.
