Gloria Butler, 86, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2026. Born in Niagara Falls, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Freda (Roundtree) Daniels.
A proud graduate of Niagara Falls High School, Gloria went on to earn both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Buffalo State College, where she excelled academically and was recognized as an honors student throughout her entire educational journey. Her dedication to learning and the arts shaped a remarkable career.
Gloria was the first African American art teacher in the Niagara Falls School District. Throughout her distinguished career, she taught at 39th Street School, 13th Street School, and Gaskill School. Her passion for teaching extended far beyond the classroom; she also shared her love of art with the community through classes at Griffon Manor, the International Center, and the Girl's Club.
An exceptionally gifted artist, especially known for her drawing, Gloria began receiving national recognition in 1962, when her artwork was displayed in museums and galleries across the United States. Her creativity flowed into every part of her life. She loved arts and crafts, was a skilled sewer, and approached every project with imagination and care. In recognition of Gloria's remarkable artistry and her deep commitment to the community, a fellow artist created a portrait of her that is proudly displayed at the Niagara Falls Heritage Center. Above all, Gloria loved her family immensely. She will be deeply missed.
Gloria is survived by her daughter, Allyson Butler and her son, Corey Butler; her grandsons, Elbert and Stanley; special person to the family, Tracey Griffin Lowery, as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was predeceased by her former husband, Elbert "Al" Butler, who passed away in 2000. In memory of his passing, The Monroe Community Scholarship is given out annually in his name.
