Obituary

Guy Tom Sottile, 89, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 22, 2019 at Our Lady of Peace Healthcare Facility.  Born on August 24, 1929 in Philadelphia, PA., he was the son of the late Gaetano and Lucia Francesca (Domanico) Sottile.  On July 1, 1961, he married his loving wife Elizabeth "Betty" Jane (Russell) Sottile; predeceased Guy on December 17, 2013.

Guy received his undergraduate degree from LaSalle University, Philadelphia, PA., where he played four years of baseball as an infielder. In addition to baseball, Guy was a manager on LaSalle's Basketball team during their 1952-1953 NIT Championships and their 1954 NCAA National Championship.  Guy signed a professional baseball contract with the Chicago White Sox farm team.

Guy proudly served as an Officer in the United Stated Marine Corps and received the National Defense Service Medal upon his honorable discharge.

Guy continued his education and received his Master's in Education and Administration from Niagara University, Lewiston, NY.  He began his career as a Special Education Teacher for the Niagara Falls City School District teaching at South Junior High School, where he met his future wife and fellow teacher, Betty. He also taught at Gaskill Middle School and Niagara Falls High School where he coached boys' JV baseball, girls' volleyball, basketball and softball. Guy was Head Basketball coach at Bishop Duffy High School where they won the 1961-1962 Manhattan Cup Championship. He served as assistant coach for Niagara University Basketball.  Following his retirement from the Niagara Falls City School district, Guy continued teaching as a homeschool teacher for Orleans-Niagara BOCES. Guy had a love for sports and coaching, he was Co-founder and Sponsor of the Whirlpool Park Little League and a former Umpire and WNY Basketball official.

Guy served 5 terms as a Niagara Falls City Councilman, two consecutive terms from 1968 to 1976 and three consecutive terms from 1986 to 1998. Guy was active in many service and volunteer community organizations; Sertoma Club, Cristoforo Columbo Society, Italian Sons and Daughters of America, the Knights of Columbus Council #247 and the Salvation Army. He was a member of the Board of Associates at St. Mary's Hospital and Niagara Catholic High School Board of Directors. Above all, Guy loved spending time and traveling with his family and friends.

Guy is survived by his three children, Thomas Mark (Marie) Sottile of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, Lisa Ann (Richard) Bagdonas of Dundas, Ontario, Canada and Carrie Lynn Sottile of Niagara Falls, New York; his grandchildren, Caitlyn Marie Sottile and Thomas Mark Sottile, Jr.; one sister, Carrie (late William) Rice and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his wife and parents, Guy was predeceased by his brother Egidio (Franca) Sottile of Rogliano, Calabria, Italy.

Visitation will be on Friday, March 29 th from 2-4 & 7-9 P.M. at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY, where funeral services will begin on Saturday at 9:15 A.M., followed by Guy's Mass of Christian Burial at 10 A.M. at St. Raphael Church, 3840 Macklem Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY. Entombment with Military Honors will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston, NY.
