Helen Christina (Eichel) Walter, 94, of Lewiston, NY, peacefully passed away on July 6, 2026, at Our Lady of Peace Skilled Nursing Care in Lewiston, New York.
Early Life and Journey
Helen was born on August 27, 1931, in a small village within the Danube region of Yugoslavia. She was the beloved daughter of the late Johann Eichel and Christina (Raff) Eichel. Her early childhood in Yugoslavia was simple and peaceful until her life was upended by the onset of World War II. Showing immense resilience, Helen fled her village as a refugee. Her journey took her through several European countries; despite enduring traumatic experiences, a stroke of luck eventually reunited Helen with her parents, brothers, and sister in Austria.
Life in Austria and Move to Canada
While living, studying, and working in post-war Austria, Helen met a young man, named Henry Walter, in Stocking, Austria. Henry followed her across the Atlantic to Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, where the couple was married in 1952. During their time in Canada, Helen worked as a maid while Henry completed his tool and die apprenticeship.
Building a Life in New York
In 1958, Helen and Henry relocated to New York City. There, Helen began a dedicated career spanning over 25 years as a Watch Repair Technician with the Bulova Watch Company, working until her retirement.
Helen deeply loved New York and took great pride in her community. She was an active member of both the Trinity Reformed Church and the Gottschee Club in Queens, NY. Known for being feisty, fiercely independent, and unmistakably herself, Helen truly embodied the vibrant spirit of Queens and New York City.
Later Years and Family
An avid traveler, Helen especially loved returning to Austria and visiting Canada to spend time with her friends and family who cherished her deeply. After living through the struggles of COVID isolation and the challenges brought on by increasing vision impairment, Helen relocated to Niagara Falls, NY, in 2022 to be closer to her family in Canada.
Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband, Henry; her siblings, Henry, Lisa, and Philip; and her dear niece, Erica Schmidt. She is survived by and will be dearly missed by her sister-in-law, Frieda Eichel and her many nieces and nephews.
Services and Funeral Arrangements
The interment service will be held on July 30, 2026, 2:00 PM at St. Peter's Cemetery, immediately followed by a Celebration of Life at the Concordia Club, both located in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. Memorial offerings may be made in Helen’s memory to Fight Blindness Canada or a charity of your choice.
