Henry W. 'Harry' Collins, 103, of the Village of Lewiston, passed away at his home on April 1, 2021. Born in London, England, he was the son of the late Edward and Emily (Walker) Collins. As a young man he enjoyed racing pigeons and he held many jobs, including being a page at the Houses of Parliament. Harry served in the British Honourable Artillery Company as an anti-aircraft gunner during World War II and played on their football (soccer) team.
After his military service, he was employed as Chief Technician in the Zoology department at King's College, London. On June 21, 1952, he married Kathleen 'Kath' McDonald (Bell) Collins in London. Kath predeceased him on August 8, 2007, after 55 years of marriage.
Harry and Kath came to the United States in 1963, living in Clarence, NY. From 1963 until 1976, he served as Laboratory Manager for the University at Buffalo Theoretical Biology Department. In 1976, he and Kath moved to Worcester, MA, and Harry worked in a similar capacity for Worcester Polytechnic Institute until his retirement in 1985. They lived on Cape Cod after his retirement and eventually moved back to Western New York, settling in Lewiston. Harry enjoyed gardening, camping, and playing darts and table tennis. He also loved playing cards and cribbage. He was a fan of the English Football Club, Arsenal F.C. His greatest love was spending time with his family, having a pint and a sing-a-long.
Harry is survived by his children, Fiona (Stephen) Blazczak, Moira (Michael) Smalter, Melanie (Gary)Tisdale, and Tessa (William) Cannata; his grandchildren, Fiona (John) Leshow, Peter (Chris) Blazczak, Gregory Smalter, Jonathan (Kristine) Smalter, Daniel Cannata, and Edward Cannata; many great-granchildren, one great-great grandson as well as family in the UK. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his five siblings Edward, Emily, Florence, Charles, and Thomas, his grandson, Mark Blazczak, and great-grandson, Benjamin Leshow.
A private remembrance will be held by the family at a future date.
