James N. DeFranco, 95, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 20, 2019, surrounded by his beloved family at Elderwood at Wheatfield Nursing Residence. Born in Niagara Falls, he was the son of the late Russell and Constance (DeMartino) DeFranco.
Jim attended local schools and graduated from Trott Vocational High School. He served in the United States Army from February of 1943 until his honorable discharge on April 10, 1946.
Jim married his loving wife, Zora (Rusnak) DeFranco on July 3, 1954 at Mt. Carmel Church.
Mr. DeFranco was employed as a painter for the City of Niagara Falls for over 30 years until his retirement in 1986. He was devout catholic and longtime parishioner of Prince of Peace Church. He was also a former member of the YMCA in Niagara Falls. Jim was an avid handball player and competed as a boxer while serving in the United States Army. He also enjoyed reading and tending to his garden. Above all, Jim was devoted to his family, who he loved spending time with.
In addition to his wife of 64 years, he is survived by his children, Constance (Frank) Nardello, Mary Kennedy, Andrea DeFranco (Rick Tarapczynski), Russell (Dawn) DeFranco, Denise (Tim) DeFranco-Mast, James G. DeFranco and Carolyne (Stephen) Raglow-DeFranco; sixteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two siblings, Murry (Angela) DeFranco and Marie (late Tony) (late Frank) Jemolio; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister, Frances DeFranco.
The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff of Elderwood at Wheatfield Nursing Residence for the outstanding care and compassion given to Jim.
There will be no prior visitation. Mr. DeFranco's Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 23 rd at 11:00 A.M. in St. Vincent De Paul Parish at Prince of Peace Church, 1055 N. Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY 14304. Interment with Military Honors will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Arrangements by M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL.
