James G. Sorta, 95, of Niagara Falls, NY passed away on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at N.F. Memorial Medical Center. Born in Tyler, PA he was the son of the late Gabriele and Angela (Morelli) Sorta.
In 1928, James came to the city as a child with his family where he lived until the present time. He attended local schools and graduated from the former Trott Vocational High School. During World War II he served in the U.S. Marines until his honorable discharge on November 7, 1946. James married Yolanda (Pascucci) Sorta at St. Joseph Church in Niagara Falls in May of 1953. Mrs. Sorta later predeceased him on June 15, 1985 after 32 beautiful years together. James was a skilled cabinet maker and worked alongside his brother-in-law, Tony Quintieri, at the former Quintieri Cabinets. He was also a member of the Carpenter's Local Union 280 and assisted various local companies including Virtuoso and Scrufari Construction.
Mr. Sorta was a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus Council 247, where he received his Fourth Degree status in 1971 and later obtained the "Distinguished Knight of the Year Award" in 1989. He was also a longtime member of St. Joseph Church, where he served as an usher, a member of the Holy Name Society and the Senior Society.
In his leisure time, James enjoyed bowling, golfing and tending to his garden. Above all, he loved spending time with his loving family.
James is survived by two children James J. (Sandra) Sorta and Angela (Scott) Miner; eleven grandchildren, Nick, Dustin, Emily, Luke, Rose, Angelina, Jada, Josiah, Levi, Adam and Victoria, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by eight siblings Mary (late Albert) Franjoine, Caroline (late Peter) Rocco, Josephine (late Anthony) Quintieri, Louise (late John) Jack, Jenny (late Jerald) Vitagliano, Sylvia (late Donald) Hickey, Jessie (late Edward) Chmiel and Joseph Sorta.
Visitation will be on Sunday, October 9th from 3 – 5 P.M. at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY, where The Knights of Columbus Council 247 will conduct a service at 4:00 P.M. Funeral services will begin on Monday, October 10th at 9:15 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 A.M. in Holy Family Parish at St. Joseph Church, 1413 Pine Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY.
