Beloved Wife, Mother and Grandmother
Jewel (Yates) Longo, 74, passed away on February 17, 2016, at Mt. St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston, NY, while under the care of hospital staff, her loving family and Niagara Hospice. Born in Albion, NY on July 27, 1941 she was the daughter of the late Wallace C. and Jeanne (Tower) Yates and beloved wife of Ronald J. Longo. They were Niagara Falls High School sweethearts, both graduating in 1959 and were married on August 26, 1961, celebrating their 54th wedding anniversary in August of 2015.
Jewel was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls and graduated high school with honors. She began her work career with Hooker Chemical Corp. as a secretary in the patent department in Niagara Falls, and then moved on to become the receptionist at the research and development building on Grand Island. Jewel then moved on to work at Mt. St. Mary's Hospital in the admitting department and later joined the Memorial Hospital Mental Health Department as an office manager. Jewel later took a position with Edwards High Vacuum Inc. on Grand Island as a human resource secretary and receptionist, from which she retired to be with her husband in Houston, Texas where he accepted a job and relocated in 1995. They returned five years later to Niagara Falls to care for Jewel's mother and her husband's parents who were very ill at that time. Jewel was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2009 and began care and treatment at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. She fought a courageous battle for almost seven years.
Jewel enjoyed the outdoors, having family gatherings, reading, and traveling. Vacations to California, the Bahama's, Hawaii, and Australia were very special along with many trips to Florida and Colorado. Jewel always had a beautiful smile for everyone she met. Most special to her was spending time with her family. Her greatest loves were her husband, daughter, son, and granddaughters Stephanie and Melanie Longo whom she adored. She had a special bond with her niece Sabrina (Mark) Anderson of Denver, Colorado and their two daughters Dana and Olivia. In addition to her husband Ronald, Jewel is survived by a daughter Susan (Milczarski) Longo of Ellenton, Florida, son Steven Longo of Grand Island, NY, and sister, Cheryl Yates of Ellenton, Florida. Also surviving are her granddaughters, aunts, uncles and many nieces and nephews. Jewel was predeceased by brothers, Wallace (Yurda of Town of Niagara, NY) Yates Jr., Ronald (Janet) Yates and one sister Elaine (Thomas) White.
