John A. D’Apollo, Sr., 95, of Lewiston, NY, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2026, at Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence. Born in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late Matteo and Adelina (Deluca) D’Apollo.
A proud graduate of Niagara Falls High School, Class of 1949, John built a life grounded in hard work, devotion, and deep love for his family. On June 13, 1953, he married his beloved wife, Joanne M. (Russo) D’Apollo, at St. Columba Church in Buffalo, NY. Their marriage was a beautiful partnership marked by joy, faith, and a shared love of socializing and dancing out together.
For over 28 years, John worked at Hysen Supplies and also owned and operated D’Apollo Paints in Niagara Falls for several years. After retiring, John remained active as a sales representative with Schuele Paints, continuing to enjoy the friendships and connections he made throughout his career.
John was an avid fan of the New York Yankees, Buffalo Bills, and Buffalo Sabres. Above all, John adored his family, they were the center of his world.
John is survived by five children, Mary D’Apollo, Annette (Roger) Legg, Adeline (Nick Manzare) Costa, Mathew (Ethelene) D’Apollo, and Joanne (John) Chicchetti; his grandchildren: Nicholas (Mary) Legg, Mark (Anna) Legg, Kristen (Paul) Harzynski, David Legg, and John A. D’Apollo III; and his great grandchildren: Tristan, Marcello, Nolan, Lucas, Eli, Mario, Lilyanna, and Ailey, as well as many nieces and nephews.
John was predeceased by his beloved wife, Joanne, in 2003 and their beloved son, John A. D’Apollo, Jr., in 2013. He was also predeceased by his siblings Genavieve (late Anthony) Carrano, Millie (late Alfonse) Campanella, Michael (late Shirley) D’Apollo, and Benedict (late Mary) D’Apollo; and his sister-in-law, Rosalind (late Thomas) Hare.
The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to the entire staff of Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence, especially Doug, Suzanne and Amy of their Memory Care Unit (1 West) for the love and support provided to John.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 16, from 2–5 PM at M.J. Colucci & Son Niagara Funeral Chapel, 2730 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY, where funeral services will begin at 5 PM. Committal prayer services and interment will be held privately for John’s family in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Niagara Falls, NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Western New York Chapter at Alzheimer's Association . Visit mjcoluccifuneralchapel.com for online condolences.
