Obituary

John Lee Hurley, Sr., a resident of Palm Beach, Florida and Buffalo, New York, died on October 25, 2021 at 95 years of age. He was born on August 26, 1926 in Buffalo, New York to Irene Margaret Lee and Emmet Daniel Hurley.

John was raised in Erie, Pennsylvania and attended The Cathedral Preparatory School in Erie as well as The Cranwell School in Lenox, Massachusetts. He graduated from Georgetown University in 1948 and Georgetown University Law School, 16th in his class in 1951. He met his wife of 70 years, Maryann Haberl Hurley, in Washington, D.C., a graduate of Chevy Chase College. He was a veteran of World War II.

John joined the law firm of Kenefick, Cook, Mitchel, Bass and Letchworth currently Phillips Lytle LLP in Buffalo, NY where he practiced law before joining his father-in-law as Vice President of Commercial Pipe and Supply Corporation. Later, becoming President and Owner of Commercial Pipe and Supply Corporation that continues to this day as a fourth-generation business.

He also served as a Board of Director at The Security Peoples Bank in Erie, Pennsylvania and as a Board of Director at The Buffalo Club from 1988 - 1991. He was a member of St. Edward's Church, The Buffalo Club, Wanakah Country Club, The Country Club of Buffalo, Jonathan's Landing Golf Club, Jupiter, Florida, The Beach Club, Palm Beach and The Palm Beach Old Guard.

John was an avid sportsman excelling in his passion of golf beginning at an early age of 12 with a hole-in-one. He continued that form in later life by winning several local Member Invitationals which included his home course - The Country Club of Buffalo.

He is survived by his wife, Maryann Haberl Hurley and children: John L.  Hurley Jr. (Diane), Kevin B. Hurley (Maureen), Anne B. Hurley (Thomas) and Barbara B. Hurley. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Melissa Hurley Denys (Charlie), John L. Hurley III (Kathleen), Gregory G. Hurley, George C. Hurley, Emily A. Hurley and four great grandchildren: Griffin L.  Denys, Maxwell J. Denys, John L. Hurley IV and Grace L. Hurley. He is predeceased by his son George E. Hurley, brother Emmet D. Hurley and sister Margaret White Dodge.
