John S. Mattera, 86, of Niagara Falls, NY, passed away on May 22, 2021 in Buffalo, NY. Born in Bronx, NY, he was the son of the late Giouse and Cecelia (Dellicurti) Mattera.

John graduated from Bronx Vocational High School in 1953.  He served in the United States Army from 1954 until his honorable discharge in 1956.  John enjoyed a career for local companies spending a short time at Dupont, before devoting more than 50 years working in various roles at Occidental Chemical Corporation, retiring once in 1996, before returning as a contractor and working at Oxy up until September 2020, when he officially retired at age 85.

John was fiercely devoted to his family, especially his grandchildren, committing countless hours serving as a cheerleader at their sporting events and supporting them in all ventures. He was an avid gardener, winemaker, Buffalo Bills enthusiast and friend to all. He volunteered throughout his life for various organizations, most notably painting soccer fields for more than 15 years with his good friend Kevin Chambers for the Niagara Police Athletic League.

John is survived by his daughters, Diane (Keith) Joseph and Donna Mattera, his grandchildren, Christi Tumminelli, John (Jerri) Joseph, Nicholas Mattera, Justin Hayes and E.J. (Keira) Hayes; his great-grandchildren, Jackson and Johnny Tumminelli, Raelynn Joseph, Eden, Eirelyn and Scotlyn Hayes; his beloved sister, Mary (Lou) Iobbi, as well as many nieces and nephews with whom he had a special bond with.  He was predeceased by his son, Johnny Boy Mattera, and his siblings, Joe (Dolly) Mattera, Jimmy Mattera, Frank Mattera, Tony (Agnes) Mattera, and Anna (late Bobby) Cimillo.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 27 from 2 – 7 PM at M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY 14304, where funeral services will be held on Friday, May 28 at 10 AM.  Interment with Military Honors at Acacia Park Cemetery, North Tonawanda, NY.  In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to a children's charity of one's choice.   Visit mjcoluccifuneralchapel.com for online condolences.
