John W. Anderson 51, passed away February 15, 2012 in Chattanooga, Tennessee under the care of Hospice. Born in Niagara Falls, NY he was the son of Samuel John Anderson and the late Anne L. (Gaikezheyongai) Anderson.
John graduated from Niagara Falls High School and continued his education at Columbus State College, and the University of Tennessee.
John took great pride in his heritage. He was an enrolled Mohawk and Ojibwe of Six Nations Reserve in Ohsweken, Ontario. He was an activist for Native American Rights and was Co-founder of CITA (Chattanooga Inter Tribal Association) and CIRCL (Chattanooga Indigenous Resource Center & Library). John was also a former commissioner (2001-2005) and TNNAC Convention delegate (2007-2009).
John worked at Homeless Health Care, Hamilton County Government, and
Community Kitchen. John organized and participated in the protection of Moccasin Bend, Rattlesnake Springs and Little Cedar Mountain sites, and led the discussions at UTC to end UTC's 'Chief Moccanooga' mascot. Anderson volunteered at Big Brothers & Big Sisters and as Boy Scout troop master. He had a great love and appreciation for football, literature, nature and his Native American culture.
In addition to his father, John is survived by his three brothers Steven (Mary) Anderson of California; Paul (late Jean) Anderson and Richard Anderson both of Niagara Falls, NY; four sisters Faye (Lyle) Gray of Tennessee; Sharon (Glen) Durham and Dawn (Paul) Townsend both of Niagara Falls, NY; and Carol Anderson of California . He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and his most cherished friends Tom, Terri and many of his childhood friends.
Visitation will be held Monday February 27th from 6 – 9p.m. at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY where a Memorial service will immediately follow at 9:00PM. Burial will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
