Name Joseph S. Candella, Sr.

Joseph S. Candella, Sr., 98, of the Town of Niagara passed away on Thursday November 13, 2014 at Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence in Lewiston, NY. Born in Jamestown, NY he was the son of the late James and Mary (Amato) Candella.

Joseph came to Niagara Falls, NY at the age of five with his family and attended local schools. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army and his brave actions led to saving the lives of forty American GI's and three German civilians. On January 22, 1944, he married Theresa R. (Schultz) Candella at St. Joseph's Church in Niagara Falls. Mrs. Candella predeceased him on January 25, 2013. He was employed at the Carborundum Co. in Niagara Falls, NY and retired in 1979 after thirty eight years of service. He was an active member of the Buff Social Club in the Town of Niagara and the Cristoforo Colombo Society in Niagara Falls. Joe was also an inventor and held three patents for his work. One of his favorite pastimes was playing Bocce.

Mr. Candella is survived by three sons Joseph S. (Bonnie) Candella, Jr. of Newfane, NY; James (Joann) Candella of Wheatfield, NY and John C. (Sharon) Candella of Las Vegas, NV; seven grandchildren Lori, Joelle, James M., Denise, Nicole, Joseph and Jessica; nine great grandchildren, one brother-in-law Irv Wierenga of South Dakota, one sister-in-law Mary Candella of the Town of Niagara and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by nine siblings Mary Carfice, Anthony Candella, Samuel Candella, John Candella, Grace Gentile, Charles Candella, Marge Perriman, Alfred Candella and Edith Candella.

Visitation will be on Sunday from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 p.m. at the
M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY where funeral services will begin on Monday November 17th at 10 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. St. Vincent De Paul at St. Leo's Church, 2748 Military Road, Niagara Falls NY with Rev. Robert Stolinski officiating. Interment in St. Joseph Cemetery, Niagara Falls, NY. If desired, memorial donations may be made to St. Vincent De Paul Parish 2748 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY 14304.
