Joseph J. Gasbarre, 91, a longtime resident of the Town of Niagara, NY passed away peacefully on Wednesday December 4, 2013 at the home of his daughter Suzanne while under the care of Niagara Hospice. Born in Niagara Falls, NY he was the son of the late Carmine and Eusania Gasbarre.
Joseph was a lifelong resident of the Niagara Falls area. He attended local schools including the former Trott Vocational High School. As a teenager, he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corp. Joseph served in the United States Army during World War II and was involved in the campaigns of Italy and France. Following his honorable discharge he also served in the United States Navy Reserve where he traveled to California for training at Los Alamitos Naval Air Station. Joe worked for a brief time at Union Carbide in Niagara Falls. He later went on to become a plant electrician for General Motors Powertrain Plant in Tonawanda, NY for twenty five years until his retirement in the 1980's.
Joseph was a long standing member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Niagara Falls. He enjoyed spending the winters in Florida with his friends Steve, Joseph and Nancy, and his granddaughter Rebecca and her family. Summers were spent in Niagara Falls enjoying his family. He loved to watch his great-grandchildren play and their pets. He was a lifelong outdoorsman who especially loved to hunt and fish. Golf and the stock market were his two great passions. He was still golfing earlier this year, and followed the stock market until his death. Joe was also an avid fan of WWE wrestling. In his leisure time he also enjoyed playing pool and gardening.
Mr. Gasbarre was predeceased by his wife of fifty years, Ruby (Ingram) Gasbarrre. He is survived by his children, Carmen (late Bertha) Gasbarre of Georgia, Suzanne Robins of Town of Niagara, NY, Richard Gasbarre of Alleghany, NY and James Gasbarre of Wilson, NY, grandchildren, John (Anni) Robins, Matthew (Caryn) Robins, Rebecca (Paul) Goldberg, Joseph (Alyssa) Gasbarre and Christa Gasbarre, great-grandchildren, Michael, Adrienne, Amara, Savannah, Patrick and step-great-grandchild Max, nephew Sam (Donna) Gasbarre, and great-nephew Mark Gasbarre and family. He was also predeceased by one brother, Sam (late Francine) Gasbarre, and one nephew Steve Gasbarre.
Visitation will be held on Sunday from 4-6 p.m. at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL 2730 MILITARY ROAD NIAGARA FALLS, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday December 9th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Parish at St. Leo's Church, 2748 Military Road Niagara Falls, NY with Rev. Andrew Lauricella officiating, concluding with Military Honors. EVERYONE PLEASE ASSEMBLE AT CHURCH. Inurnment will be held at the convenience of the family in St. Joseph's Cemetery Niagara Falls, NY.
