Joseph Iacovitti, 88, of Niagara Falls, NY died on Sunday, March 29, 2009 at Fairchild Manor Nursing Home in Lewiston, NY. Born in Ovindoli, L'Aquila, Abruzzi, Italy he was the son of the late Vincenzo and Carmena (D'Elia) Iacovitti.
Joseph was educated in Italy and immigrated to the United States to settle in Niagara Falls, NY in 1937. During World War II he served in the United States Army as a Private First Class with the Medical Detachment 71st Infantry from November 9, 1942 until his honorable discharge on November 7, 1945. He was a Medical Aidman involved in the campaigns of Rhineland and Central Europe, and was awarded a World War II Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon (EAME), two Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal, and American Theater Ribbon. Joseph married Rose (Felicetti) Iacovitti, was employed by the City of Niagara Falls for thirty five years in the Sanitation Department and ten years in the Water Department until his retirement in the late 1970's. In his leisure time, he enjoyed tending to his garden and working in his yard.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Iacovitti is survived by one son Joseph S. Iacovitti of Ft. Wayne, IN; one sister Maria Panetta of Abruzzi, Italy and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great- nephews and cousins. He was also predeceased by two brothers Sam (late Rachel) Iacovitti and Pasquale (Pauline of Niagara Falls, NY) Iacovitti.
There will be no prior visitation. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday April 7th at 12 Noon in Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Parish at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 27th Street and Independence Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY with Rev. William Allegretto, CM officiating.
