Joseph P. Mazza, age 95, died at Riverwood Health Care Facility in Grand Island, NY on Thursday January 7, 2010. Born in Hamilton, Ontario he was the son of the late Dominic and Fortunata (Miamone) Mazza. On June 12, 1940 he married Rose J. (Sauro) Mazza at Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Niagara Falls, NY. Mrs. Mazza predeceased him on September 29, 2007.
Mr. Mazza was an area resident for over 70 years. He graduated from Niagara University in 1936 with a degree in Chemistry and worked for N.L. Industries formerly Titanium Alloy Mfg. Co. for thirty four years as a chemist, chief chemist and Director of Quality Control retiring in 1978. Joseph was a member of the American Chemical Society, American Ceramic Society, American Society for Quality Control and the American Institute of Chemists. He was the chairman of the American Institute of Chemists of Western New York for four years in the 1960's. Mr. Mazza developed many analytical procedures for the Quality Control Laboratory while at N. L. Industries and was also credited with a patent.
Mr. Mazza is survived by a son James J. (Marilyn) Mazza and a daughter Anne C. (James M.D.) Dunlop both of Grand Island, NY; five grandchildren Rosemary (Bryan) Clapacs, Carolyn (Arthur III) Meaney, Julianne (Eric) Davis, James (Cathy) Dunlop Jr. and Joseph (Kimberlee) Dunlop, eleven great-grandchildren, Arthur IV and Rose Catherine Meaney; William, Matthew and Catherine Davis; Maralin Clapacs, Erin and Ryan Partridge; Anna Jane Dunlop, Olivia Rose and Alex Dunlop and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by one sister Yolanda (late Frank) Gerace and one brother Ralph (late Louise) Mazza.
Friends may call on Sunday from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 p.m. at the M.J.COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY where funeral services will be held on Monday at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 27th Street and Independence Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY with Rev. Duane Klizek officiating. Interment in St. Joseph Cemetery, Niagara Falls, NY.
