Joseph Splendido, 92, of Niagara Falls, NY died on Thursday October 7, 2010 at Mt. St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston, NY. Born in Niagara Falls, NY he was the son of the late Gilberto "Albert" and Rose (Chiodo) Splendido.
Joseph was raised and educated in Old Forge, PA and returned to Niagara Falls at the age of 19. On August 27, 1942 he married Philomena M. (Riggi) Splendido in Battle Creek, MI. Mrs. Splendido predeceased him on May 28, 2007. During World War II he served in the United States Army as a mechanic with the 3509th Ordnance Mobile Automotive Maintenance Company from May 29, 1942 until his honorable discharge on December 31, 1945. He was involved in the campaigns of Rhineland and awarded the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Service Medal and World War II Victory Medal. Joseph worked as a printer for a wallpaper printing company in Niagara Falls until becoming employed as a millwright at the former Nabisco Co. in Niagara Falls where he retired from in 1980 after twenty eight years of service. Joseph was a car enthusiast and enjoyed attending antique car shows. He also loved to cook and travel with his wife and family. Joseph's greatest pleasure was spending time with his family on holidays, especially Christmas Eve.
Mr. Splendido is survived by one son Richard (Brenda) Splendido of Ransomville, NY and was predeceased by one son Gary (Patricia of Ransomville, NY) Splendido. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Rebecca (John) Cimino, Megan Splendido and Devon (fiancé Keith Printup) Splendido; three great- grandchildren, John Cimino Jr., Sara Cimino and Colette Printup as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also predeceased by one sister Lena (late Charles) Fruscione.
Friends may call on Friday from 4 – 8 p.m. at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY where funeral services will begin on Saturday October 9th at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Vincent DePaul Parish at St. Leo's Church, 2748 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY with Rev. Robert Stolinski officiating. Entombment with Military Honors will be held in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
