Obituary

Josephine T. (Scibetta) Bongiovanni, 86, of Niagara Falls, NY passed away on November 3, 2018 at Schofield Residence Nursing Facility in Kenmore, NY. Born in Niagara Falls, NY on June 9, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Dominick and Rose (Ullo) Scibetta.

Josephine, who was fondly known as Honey, was raised and educated in Niagara Falls, graduating from Niagara Falls High School in 1950.  She married Frank R. Bongiovanni on June 28, 1952 at St. Joseph Church, where she used to sing in the choir.  Mr. Bongiovanni passed away on June 14, 2005.

Josephine was employed as the Principal Library Clerk for Niagara Falls Public Library for over 22 years.  Her passion was serving as President of the United Steel Workers of America #15071 for more than 15 years, and she had the honor of becoming the first woman to hold this position.  She also served as Chairperson of United Way of Niagara and its agencies, as well as for the Sertoma Club with her husband.

She was the recipient of many awards, including The Service to Mankind Award from the Sertoma Club and the Anthony L. Bax Humanitarian Award from the United Way.  She was also appointed Honorary Mayor of Niagara Falls in 1992 by Mayor Jacob Palillo.  Josephine was active in many other clubs and organizations, including the Cataract Lodge #240, The Senior Travel Club, The Niagara County Labor Management and Niagara Orleans Labor Councils.  Josephine was selected as an honored member and was published in the Oxford's Who's Who of Elite Registry of Business Professionals.

In her spare time, Josephine enjoyed planting trees and flowers.  She was very fond of her log home that she built with her husband and they considered it their dream home.  Josephine also loved to ballroom dance with her husband Frank.   Most of all, her family was very important to her, and she cherished her time with them.

Josephine is survived by her children; Carmen F. (Kathleen) Bongiovanni, Rose (Norton) Douglas, Mary Jo (Frederick) Sutter and Dominica (Robert) Prosser; 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, her sister, Vinny (Leo) Marcantonio, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.  In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by 2 brothers, Paul (late Doris) Scibetta, and Joseph (late Michael Delahunt) Scibetta.

There will be no prior visitation.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Noon on Saturday, November 10 th , 2018 in Holy Family Parish at St. Joseph Church 1413 Pine Ave, Niagara Falls, NY, 14301.  Entombment in St. Joseph Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
