Lajos Szabo, 80, of Lewiston, NY, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2024 at his residence surrounded by family under the care of Niagara Hospice. Born in Subotica, Hungary, he was the son of the late Imre and Julia (Korponae) Szabo.
Lajos was educated in Europe, earning a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, and later earning another Master's Degree in Robotics in the United States. On June 4, 1966, he married Edith Maria (Szekeres) Szabo in Yugoslavia. Mrs. Szabo predeceased him on June 2, 2018. The family lived in Frankfurt, Germany from 1969 until immigrating to the United States in April of 1977. Lajos became an Electrician in Yugoslavia and was employed as an Electrician with General Motors in Tonawanda, NY for 32 years from 1978 until his retirement in 2009. He continued working with General Motors as a Consultant after his retirement, and also worked as an on-call Electrician for Arrow Grinding in Tonawanda, NY until December of 2023. Lajos was a member of the UAW Local 774 Union.
Lajos work as an Electrician was his life. He enjoyed teaching his grandchildren his craft. Lajos was a gifted story teller, and in addition to Hungarian, Yugoslavish and English, also spoke German and Russian. He was well-known for his family pig roasts, which he hosted for over 20 years. An extremely hardworking man, Lajos will be remembered most for his kind and caring nature, his generosity, and willingness to help his family and friends - he would give his shirt off of his own back if someone needed it.
