Obituary

Laura Martinez of 13 th Street in Niagara Falls, passed away on October 24th, 2017. Born in Collinsville, Oklahoma on March 4, 1923, she came to Niagara Falls with her family in 1925.  She was the daughter of the late Avelino and Augustina Sariego Cuervo.

A 1941 graduate of Niagara Falls High School, she took business courses at Bryant Stratton and Medaille College.

Laura worked at Kimberely Clark, at the Hooker Atomic and Chemical Co., and then retired after working for 18 years at the J.W. Myers Customer House Brokers at Lewiston Bridge.

Laura excelled in sports during high school and was featured in her high school yearbook.  She continued to participate in many sports throughout her adult life, including fast-pitch softball, bowling, and golf. In 1956, she was the recipient of the Niagara/Buffalo area "Outstanding Woman Athlete" award.

Laura was also active and a leader in many local organizations. They included Little League and Babe Ruth baseball (Charter member), the Cub Scouts (Den Mother), the Niagara Singles Dance Club, the Square and Line Dance Club, the Duke Center (Board member), the Moose Auxiliary, the Senior League Bowling Club, and the Volare Lodge (Board member).

She is survived by two loving sons, Lawrence (Andrea) Martinez of Prescott, Arizona, and Ronald (Sherry) Martinez of Montgomery, Texas; one sister, Evelyn Cichelli  Ensminger of Niagara Falls; two grandchildren, Michael (Tera) Martinez of Flower Mound, Texas and Lisa (Kerry) Killough of Houston, Texas, and five great grandsons, Jason & Alex Martinez and Kolt, Connor, and Kyle Killough.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters Mary DiNieri and Alice Conti of Niagara Falls, and her former husband Jay Martinez.  She was an aunt to many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 3 rd from 2 – 4 & 7 – 9 P.M. at M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 Military Road, Niagara Falls, where funeral services will follow on Saturday at 11:00 A.M. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations to Ehlers Danlos National Foundation (EDNF) would be greatly appreciated.
