Obituary
Leonard J. Deuro, 85, of Niagara Falls, NY died on Wednesday May 27, 2009 at Buffalo General Hospital in Buffalo, NY. Born March 11, 1924 in Niagara Falls, NY, he was the son of the late Frank and Margaret (Bongiovanni) Deuro. He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Mary (Soprano) Deuro who died in 2003.
Leonard, a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls NY, attended local schools and graduated from the former Trott Vocational High School. During World War II he served in the U.S. Air Force as a radio operator stationed in Central Burma; India (Asiatic-Pacific Theatre) from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1946. Leonard was a Firefighter for the City of Niagara Falls, NY and retired as Captain in 1985 after thirty-four years of service. He was a member of the Niagara Falls Elks Lodge 346, the American Legion Portage Post 1465 in Niagara Falls, an alumnus of the Fire Department Mutual Aid Association and the Niagara Falls Firefighters Officers Association.
Leonard is survived by his daughter, Mary Ann (Jon) Culbert of Niagara Falls, NY and was also predeceased by his son David L. Deuro in 1990. He is also survived by his grand-daughter Joni Ann (Jerry) Orfano of Niagara Falls, great grandchildren, Jerri Ann Orfano and Jon David Orfano, brothers Frank (late Lottie) Deuro, Town of Niagara and John (Geraldine 'Jere') Deuro of Niagara Falls, NY; sisters Carrie (late Ray) Szalach and Marie Bailey both of Niagara Falls, NY; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and his dear friend Isabelle Schebell.
Friends may call on Sunday, May 31, 2009 from 3 – 8 p.m. at the M.J.COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday June 1, 2009 at 11 a.m. in St. John De LaSalle Church, 8469 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY 14304. EVERYONE PLEASE ASSEMBLE AT CHURCH. Interment in will be in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery. If desired, memorial donations may be made to The Niagara Falls Firefighters Toy Fund, P.O. Box 69, Niagara Falls, NY 14302-0069.
