IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lucy M.
Rainville
July 13, 2018
Lucy M. (Massimilian) Rainville, 96 of Lewiston, NY passed away on July 13, 2018 at Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence. Born November 8, 1921 in Niagara Falls, NY she was the daughter of the late John Battista and Elvira (Orlandi) Massimilian.
After graduation from Niagara Falls High School, she attended the New York State College for Teachers in Albany, where she majored in Social Studies with minors in Latin and French. Graduating with honors, Lucy then studied at Teachers College of Columbia University, receiving her master's degree in the teaching of social studies. In addition, Lucy took graduate courses at Niagara University, University of Buffalo and Columbia University.
Lucy enjoyed a 32-year career in the Niagara Falls School System, serving at Niagara Falls High School, North Junior and South Junior. From 1951-1952, Lucy was a Fulbright-Exchange Teacher in Derby, England. In 1957, she was chosen to lead a group of ten American girls to Bergamo, Italy, under the auspices of the Experiment in International Living. Those fortunate enough to be assigned to Lucy's classes were given the opportunity to enjoy the learning process as well as to gain knowledge. Both wise and witty, Lucy possessed the unique ability to inspire, encourage, and influence her students, often even forcing them to live up to their full potential.
On July 26, 1958, Lucy married a fellow teacher, Lucien Rainville Sr., in St. Joseph's Church, and together they shared a full and rewarding life, complete with extensive travels throughout Europe. During their 40-year marriage, they also hosted many exchange students from various countries. Mr. Rainville predeceased her in August 1998.
Blessed with a probing intellect, and an admirable worldliness, Lucy was an enthusiastic traveler, making each journey a valuable learning experience. A true cosmopolitan, with many international connections, Lucy combined her love of adventure with her quest for knowledge. She was a loyal and devoted friend, and maintained close relationships throughout the world, from former students to fellow teachers, to those she had met in her travels.
Lucy possessed a deep sense of family, with their inherited traditions, and was always a thoughtful daughter to her parents, and a loving sister to her two brothers, as well as an attentive and involved mother to Anne Marie and Lucien Jr. Lucy also believed strongly in community service and donated her time and energy to many groups. She volunteered at St. Mary's Hospital for over 25 years, at the Hart Program for more than 20 years and was a frequent blood donor to the American Red Cross. In her leisure time, Lucy was also an avid reader.
Lucy is survived by her two children, Anne Marie (Michael) Heim and Lucien J. (Wendy) Rainville, Jr., two grandchildren, Charles M. Heim and Michael P. Heim, a step-granddaughter Brooke Atkinson and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also predeceased by her brothers Domenic (late Gloria) Massimilian and John L. (Dolores) Massimilian.
