The Reverend Lynn M. Shumway entered into eternal rest on June 12, 2019, at Niagara Hospice House, Lockport, New York. Fr. Shumway was born in Niagara Falls, NY on July 9, 1947; the only child of Melvin and Lucille (Bender) Shumway.
Fr. Shumway graduated from the former Sacred Heart Elementary School, Bishop Duffy High School and Niagara University. Fr. Shumway earned a Bachelor's Degree in classical languages and continued his education earning a Master's Degree in education, as well as certification as a secondary school administrator. Upon graduation from Niagara University, Fr. Shumway received a commission as a 2 nd Lt. in the United States Army and in 1971 he began his service in the United States Army Reserve. Fr. Shumway was honorably discharged in 1977 with rank of Captain.
Fr. Shumway taught Latin at Bishop Duffy High School and the West Seneca School District for eight years. After leaving teaching, Fr. Shumway was employed for over 26 years in the Information Systems Department of the Consolidated Rail Corp.
At the age of 50, Fr. Shumway entered Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora, NY and was ordained a Roman Catholic priest on May 24, 2003, when he was 55 years old. He served as the parochial vicar of St. Christopher Parish in Tonawanda, NY; as pastor of St. John de LaSalle Parish in Niagara Falls, NY; and as senior parochial vicar at St. Stephen's Parish in Grand Island, NY.
An avid bowler and golfer as a young man, in his later years Fr. Shumway turned his attention to photography and took great pride in his collection of wildlife photographs.
Fr. Shumway has donated his body to the University of Buffalo Anatomical Gift Program. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. John de LaSalle Church, 8477 Buffalo Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY, on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at 10:00 A.M. Memorial donations can be made in Fr.
