Obituary

Maria J Puglisi, age 78, of Gowanda, NY, and formerly of Lewiston, NY, went to heaven May 21 st after a brave fight with COPD. She passed away under the loving care of Gowanda Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where her family was able to comfort her in her final hours.

She was born in Niagara Falls on July 17, 1941. She was born to the late Mary and Joseph Schiavone. Maria graduated from LaSalle High School. She was a devoted wife to the late Anthony Michael Puglisi, and was predeceased in death by her sister, Joanne Schiavone.

Maria was a long term resident of Niagara Falls on Chapin Avenue, and on Hillview Court in Lewiston. She was a devoted wife, and loving mother to four children. She also worked outside the home as a manager at Twin Fair, Value, and Jenss; and helped others cleaning homes for years. She enjoyed being a den mother for the local cub scouts, pack 836. She was an active member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Lewiston, where she volunteered for over 30 years. Maria made strong links to her community, and helped organize numerous block parties and neighborhood activities. She enjoyed being a caretaker to everyone she met. She welcomed all into her home for company and meals. The neighborhood children loved the cookies and candy apples she prepared especially for them. She was an avid gardener and a true animal lover. She especially loved her extended family, and had large gatherings, especially noted for her Christmas Eve party. Maria was always smiling; and her heart was not just loving, but enormously strong.

She is survived by four children: Vernon Puglisi, Anthony Puglisi (Rena), Steven Puglisi (Kristin), and Mikell Puglisi; eight grandchildren: Max Puglisi, Dakota Spinner, Grace Puglisi, Francesca Puglisi, Dena Puglisi, Anthony Puglisi, Sebastian Puglisi, and Mike Puglisi; her sister Angela Sdao (late Eugene Sdao); niece Carla Sdao; her brother Joseph Schiavone (Karen); many beloved nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grand nephews who remained very close to her heart.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic social restrictions, funeral services will be held privately for Maria's immediate family with interment to follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made to the Lupus Foundation. Maria will be held in loving memory by her dear family and friends.
