Obituary

Martha Rose Mardirosian, 84, of Youngstown, NY, passed away on March 2, 2022. Born in Detroit, MI, she was the daughter of the late John and Pearl (Richardson) Klein; and the beloved wife of Leo Mardirosian, who she married on October 8, 1960 in Highland Park, MI.

Martha graduated from Detroit's famous, Cass Technical High School in 1955 with a major in Fine Arts. She was awarded with a full scholarship to the Art School of the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts – now the College of Creative Studies (CCS) in Detroit, MI. She majored in Interior Design and Painting under the noted director and painter Sarkis Sarkisian.

Following her graduation in 1960, Martha accepted a faculty position at CCS from 1962 to 1969 teaching 2D and 3D Design during which time she developed a passion for Fine Art photography and creative writing. After working as a free-lance Photographer during the 1970's, she returned to CCS to earn a Bachelor's degree in Photography in 1981.

During the 1980's, Martha produced a series of black and white portraits of Detroit women in the Arts. Her work was exhibited throughout the Detroit area, as well as the Detroit Institute of Art at where she was awarded a prize for her photography.

In addition to her portrait photography, she expanded her interest to include a series of architecturally inspired photographs and graves marker photographs throughout France, England and Ireland.

In the 1990's she later took a position at the Detroit Institute of Arts as a photo researcher in the Graphic Arts Department until her retirement.

Martha was an avid reader and had a lifetime interest in fictional novels which inspired her to complete her own novel titled, Cimmerian Corner, based on collegial politics.

Martha and her husband resided in Michigan for many years prior to moving to the area in 2003 to be closer to their family.

In addition to her husband of 61 years, Martha is survived by her sister, Carole (Daniel) Colter; nieces and nephews, Deana Flinchum, Stephen (Lisa) Flinchum and Civa Lynn (Matt) Spameni; her great-nieces and great-nephews, Lauren and Nicholas Flinchum and Matthew, Leah and Peter Spameni; and her brother-in-law, Oscar "Buddy" (late Helen Mardirosian) Flinchum.
