Loving Father, Brother, Grandfather, and Great -Grandfather

Martin A. "Bud" Shimmel , 87, of Niagara Falls, NY passed away at his residence on Saturday April 26, 2014. Born in Niagara Falls, NY he was the son of the late Martin J. and Mary (Smolen) Shimmel.

A lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, Marty attended local schools and graduated from Trott Vocational High School in 1944. He served in the United States Army as a military policeman during World War II from September 20, 1944 until his honorable discharge on June 1, 1946. Marty worked for over forty years as office manager at Cataract Trucking in Niagara Falls, NY until retiring in 1990. He married Mary C. (Messina) Shimmel on June 19, 1954 at St. Joseph's Church in Niagara Falls, NY. Mrs. Shimmel predeceased him on April 16, 2013.

Marty was the founder and past president of North End Little League, founder and past president of Niagara Falls High School Football Boosters, and past president of the Niagara Falls Men's Bowling Association. He was a fixture at local sporting events at Hyde Park in Niagara Falls, and served 35 years as a sideline official for Niagara Falls High School football games. Marty was also a longtime member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Niagara Falls, where he was a member of their Holy Name Society and Ushers Club. In 2008 he was inducted into the Niagara Falls Sports Hall of Fame and was recipient of the Sertoma Man of the Year award. Marty was an avid Buffalo Bills and Cleveland Indians fan and enjoyed gardening, but most importantly, Marty enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Mr. Shimmel is survived by his two sons, Martin J. (Paula) Shimmel of Lewiston, NY and Michael A. Shimmel of Niagara Falls, NY, three grandchildren, Sara Shimmel, Michael M. (Nicci) Shimmel and Amanda Shimmel, two great-grandchildren, Hayden and Carter, one sister Betty Shimmel of Niagara Falls, NY, sisters-in-law Jean (Rocco) Marra of Niagara Falls, NY and Dora (late John) Friona of Lewiston, NY, and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

Visitation will be held on Monday 5 – 8 PM and Tuesday 2 – 8 PM at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD NIAGARA FALLS, NY, where funeral services will begin on Wednesday April 30 ^th at 11:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12 Noon at Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Parish at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church 27 ^th Street and Independence Ave. Niagara Falls, NY with Rev. Duane Klizek officiating. Entombment with military honors in Gate of Heaven Cemetery Lewiston, NY.
