Mary L. (Young) D'Anna, 80 of Niagara Falls, NY, the wife of the late Joseph D'Anna, daughter of William and Lillian (Hall) Young, passed away on Sunday May 9, 2010 at her home. Aunt Mary was at home under the care of Niagara Hospice and entered into rest in the presence of her family on her final Mother's Day.
Aunt Mary was a selfless and caring woman who always put others first. A prime example of her selflessness is portrayed when she raised her niece, Doreen, after her sister-in-law unexpectedly passed away. Aunt Mary raised and nurtured her niece as her own daughter from the age of 11. She was employed as a waitress at the former Horse Shoe Restaurant and later at the former Biagio's Restaurant both in Niagara Falls.
Despite a lifetime plagued with poor health, Aunt Mary remained active and independent until the very end. Aunt Mary worked tirelessly in her yard treating her neighbors to a beautiful and lush garden. Aunt Mary also enjoyed baking, taking care of her family and spending time with the family cat "KITTY". Aunt Mary devoted herself to her husband and was dedicated to helping her family and loved ones. She also spent many years caring for infirm elderly friends and neighbors. When Aunt Mary herself became infirm, she lived with and was cared for by her niece Doreen and her dear friend Tony Putaski. Aunt Mary was never judgmental and offered unconditional love to her entire family.
Mary "Aunt Mary" was loved and will be dearly missed by her niece Doreen L. (Young) Cafarella of Niagara Falls, NY, her dear friend Tony Putaski, great-nephews, Jason (Nicole) Cafarella and Matthew (Joanna) Cafarella who lost the only grandmother they knew, her brother William Young of Lewiston, NY, sisters, Betty (late Paul) Metzler of Newfane, NY, Phyllis (late Don) Bechtel of Niagara Falls, NY, Patricia Walker of Olcott, NY and many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her sisters, Ruth Gerard and Jesse (late Nick) D'Agostino, and brothers, Robert (Jackie of Sanborn, NY) Young, James Young and Johnny Young.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday May 12th from 3 – 7 p.m. at the M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 MILITARY ROAD, NIAGARA FALLS, NY. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family in Oakwood Cemetery, Niagara Falls, NY.
