Mary R. Colao
Mary R. (Balassone) Colao , 87 of Niagara Falls, NY entered into eternal rest peacefully on Sunday, May 31, 2015 at Schoellkopf Health Care Facility in Niagara Falls, NY. Born in Niagara Falls, NY she was the daughter of the late Gaetano and Francesca (LaCivita) Balassone.
Mary was a lifelong resident of Niagara Falls, NY, attended local schools, married and was a stay at home mom. She later began working with family at Henry's Hamburgers , Doktor Hair and Ciao Hair Salon where she was affectionately known as "Aunt Mary" to all in Niagara Falls, NY.
She enjoyed walking, spending time with family and often attended local jazz clubs with her longtime companion John and several friends for dinner and dancing. She was often told that she bore a strong resemblance to Susan Hayward and was always complimented on her red hair.
Mary is survived by two children, Carmen A. (Anna Maria) Colao of Niagara Falls, NY and Kathryn (Colao)( Dave) Caldarella of Cheektowaga, NY; two grandchildren, Michael C. (Teresa) Colao and Andrea M. (Christopher) Czopp; two great grandchildren, Isabella and Jacob Colao; four siblings, Ann (Mario) Beccari of Lewiston,NY, Norma (late Angelo) Colao of Niagara Falls, NY, Brother Gabriel "Frank" Balassone O.F.M. of Cincinatti, OH and Dominic (Marge) Balassone of Lewiston, NY; Mary is also survived by her longtime companion of 32 years John Gawel of Niagara Falls, NY: 1 Aunt Vincenza Colucci and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her former husband Carmen A. Colao Sr.
There will be no prior visitation. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday June 6th at 9:00 A.M. in Holy Family of Jesus , Mary and Joseph Parish at St. Joseph's Church 1413 Pine Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY with Rev. Joseph Rogliano officiating. EVERYONE PLEASE ASSEMBLE AT CHURCH. Entombment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston, NY at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimers Association of WNY, 2805 Wehrle Drive, Suite 6, Williamsville, NY 14221 or to the Niagara Hospice Alliance, 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport, NY 14094.
