Mary E. Fabrizio (Maria Annunciata Basile), age 96, of Niagara Falls, NY passed away peacefully on October 31, 2024. Born on March 23, 1928, in Galeton, PA, she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Palma (Gialloretto) Basile.
Mary graduated from Galeton High School in June 1945. In September of that year, she joined the U.S. Army Cadet Nurses Corps. This was the nation's first integrated U.S. Service Corps. organized to fulfill the urgent need for nurses during WWII. Her agreement was a nursing education in exchange for service to her country.
In 1948, she graduated from Germantown Hospital Nursing School as a Registered Nurse (RN). She graduated from Villanova University in June 1952 with a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing Education.
During the summer of 1953, Mary drove a tourist limousine for sightseeing in Niagara Falls, New York. In September 1953, she started teaching Practical Nursing at Trott Vocational School. She remained in this role from 1954 to 1959.
On September 22, 1956, Mary married the love of her life, Alexander Dominic Fabrizio. Together, they raised five children: Albert, Ann, John, Debbie, and Karen. Their family has grown to include 21 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Mary re-entered the nursing profession in 1973, working as a Registered Nurse (RN) on the night shift on the Orthopedic floor (A-4) at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center. She retired from Memorial Medical Center in 1993 after a distinguished 20-year career in nursing.
In her free time, Mary loved knitting, cooking, baking, crossword puzzles, reading, and sewing. She also took great care and enjoyed spending time with her beloved Canary, "Tweety." She cherished spending time with her family and was an active member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel church, where she sang in the choir for many years. Mary had a special love for hot peppers and enjoyed watching Blue Bloods. She took great pride in her nursing career and was the biggest fan of her children and grandchildren.
Mrs. Fabrizio is survived by her children, Albert (Judy Havlik) Fabrizio, Ann (Tom) Ward, John (Anna Kumm) Fabrizio, Debra (Dale) Valente Kobler and Karen (Ted) Ackley; her grandchildren, Matthew Ward, Christina (Christoph) Kothe, Maria Fabrizio, Melissa Fabrizio, Veronica Fabrizio, Jonnie (Amanda) Martin, Anthony Fabrizio, Zachary Valente, Alexander (Emily Kinkaid) Ackley, Amanda Ackley, Aaron Ackley, David Kobler, Rebecca Kobler, Jarod (Emily) Kobler, Thomas (Alicia) Yamashita and Robert Young; her great-grandchildren, Landon, Kalanni, Angelo, Nico, Beau, Avalynn, Adrianne, Rowan, Mackenzie and Teddy, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Alexander D. Fabrizio, and siblings, Joseph 'Pep' (late Vera) Basile, Grace Basile, Theresa 'Daisy' Mistretta, Camillo 'Tommy' (late Bonnie) (late Anne) Basile, Helen (late Dave) Frisoni and the late Tony (Elaine) Basile.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, November 6 from 3 – 8 PM at M.J. COLUCCI & SON NIAGARA FUNERAL CHAPEL, 2730 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY, where funeral services will begin on Thursday at 9:15 AM, followed by Mary's Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in Mt. Carmel Church, 27th Street and Independence Avenue, Niagara Falls, NY. Entombment in St. Joseph Cemetery. If desired, memorial offerings may be made to the American Heart Association at heart.org.
