Michael E. McGrath, 78, of Wilson, NY, passed away on June 26, 2026, at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital. Born in Detroit, MI, he was the son of the late Edward “Eddie” and Marjorie “Midge” (Brueckman) McGrath.
Growing up in Detroit, Michael developed a love for hockey, a strong sense of family, and a love for the water, as he spent every summer at the family cottage. After graduating from De La Salle Collegiate High School, he enlisted in the United States Air Force working as an electrician and proudly serving in the Vietnam War. Upon return he was stationed at the Lockport Radar Site and soon met the love of his life, Elaine (Jack) McGrath. They were married at St. Peter’s Church in Lewiston in 1969.
Beginning their lives together, Mike and Elaine moved to California where they welcomed the birth of their two daughters, Kelly and Kimberlee. They returned to Western New York in 1978 to be closer to family and settled in Wilson on almost 100 acres of land, in a house they made a home.
For almost 30 years, Michael worked as an electrician and later as a shop committeeman and an ergonomics rep for the UAW Local 686, at GM - Delphi. Upon retirement, Michael was very dedicated to his work with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary at Station Niagara. He taught boater safety classes, performed boat inspections, assisted with patrols, and held leadership roles. He especially cared for the active duty coasties, who fondly called him Grandpa Mike.
Michael enjoyed boating, camping, and riding his Harley-Davidson, but his greatest joy was his family. He treasured every moment spent with his grandchildren, proudly attending their many athletic and school events.
Michael is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Elaine (Jack) McGrath; his daughters, Kelly McGrath Scott and Kimberlee (Joseph) Dunlop; his cherished grandchildren, Marissa Scott, Olivia Dunlop, Alex Dunlop, and Jackson Dunlop; three siblings, Thomas (Carol) McGrath, Greg (Kathy) McGrath, and Paul (Nancy) McGrath, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Sharon (late James) Culbertson.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 29 from 4–8 PM at M.J. Colucci & Son Niagara Funeral Chapel, 2730 Military Road, Niagara Falls, NY, where funeral services will begin on Tuesday, June 30, at 11:00 AM, concluding with Military Honors.
